TOPIC: ISSUE208 - "The way people look, dress, and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society's ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people."
WORDS: 532          TIME: 01:06:52          DATE: 2008-7-31 15:32:39

The speaker contends that as people's attitudes and interests reflects on the way people look, dress, and act we can know more about the society's ideas and values by looking their appearance an behavior. Although the speaker may overlooks the scientific procedure of making a conclusion, on balance I agree with this contention.

To begin with, I think how people develop their values and ideas accounts for why the contention is deductive. After all, Values and ideas in the making are always formed by people's education from their parents with traditional ideas and the whole society's inherent values. When we are young, what our parents and teachers say and the way they deal with affairs influence us in large measure. Those values and idea become accepted when we grow up and direct our wearing and doings.

For example, how people in China and America treat the aged tell values of the two countries.  Chinese will live with their parents and look after them when they grow old because it is the tradition that passes off generation by generation. However, in handling the same things Americans will probably leave their parents alone or put them in rest house. If it is necessary, they would also give them some money to keep their basic living. What Americans rarely do is taking their parents home and take care of them personally. Form the contrary phenomenon, we can find that Chinese are more respect to their elders and Americans pay more attention on the value of independence.

Another example involves what people wear. Before the year of Reform and Open, people in China would not be willing to take on western suits not only because the country banned the import and manufactures of the garments but also the whole society resisted all western objects and values. But 30 years after the maintenance of policy made by the country's decision maker, no one will feel surprising when they see people wear all kinds of clothes include western suits and latest fashion of Paris in every streets in China. The change reveals the transform of the values of Chinese people from preservation to openness and tolerance.

When we observe what the people in North Korea wear we cannot help to think that they are still rejecting the outside world and the society is still backward looking. In fact, North Korea does keep in touch with few countries and the people there are more ossified.

Admittedly, if we are not able to conclude a society by scientific procedure we will fail to discover the real ideas and values there. For instance, if we get impression of a country only by television that always has their own tainted consideration we will get improper impression of another country's ideas. When I find a French graduate asks his Chinese classmate in one of the best university in France whether Chinese people use computer now I can imagine what the French mass media tells their people and what France people think about the ideas of Chinese people.

To sum up, only by scientific procedure can we unearth a society's values by observing the appearance and behavior of the people and interactive with them more effectively.
