"Money spent on research is almost always a good investment, even when the results of that research are controversial."


Whether the research should be invested even when the results are controversial? As far as I am concerned, the benefits our human being get from the development of technology are undoubtedly, and when the results are controversial, we should distinguish whether they are more benefit for human than harmful.

To begin with, any researches of science or technology turning out to be benefit for human beings are worth of investment. Nowadays, we are living in a world with rapid pace in of technological change which brings about significant revolution that makes humans more intelligent and living more comfortable. The advent of radio and television dramatically changed the ways in which the social and cultural values are transmitted to various groups of people; The industrial revolution completely changed the organization of the economic institutions; The invention of computer leads people into a totally brand new world. These are all the results of investments on those researches exploring the unknown world.

Admittedly, there are always controversies accompanying with the results of the research, but it does not mean facing all controversial research we should give up investing on them. As we know, sometimes the controversy is unavoidable because of the research itself transcends the cognition of general people and the current society. We can still remember that when someone proposed the conception of iron-horse in the ancient which turns out to be the automobile facilitating millions of thousands of people, that no one would believe him or even invest him for the research at that time; and the invention of plane also experienced such a process. Another convincing example is the relativity, the theory of which is above almost all the people's cognition, that it is said that only several of the most famous scientists could understand it. Though the controversy is, the investment on its research would no doubt bring human being a great value.

However, when the result of the research is involved with some antihuman and immoral questions, the investment should be cautious. The catastrophe brought by the nuclear-weapon, the events of the toxic gas leaking which killing thousands of people and the most controversial issue about the clone-human which would bring lots of problems about the ethics and moral all indicate us that it is dangerous to human being if abusing the science and technology, and the decision of investment should be considered thoroughly before made. In addition, towards those researches like the Japanese invaders using the human subjects in their biomedical experiments in the Second World War, which are absolutely unhuman, the government and the whole society should uncompromisingly ban them from carrying on.

To sum up, generally, the researches in all aspects promote the society. When the results of the research are controversial, the discrimination between advantage and disadvantage is requisite, and we should especially be cautious when the research is involved with the moral and ethical problems.
