ARGUMENT 179
- The following is a memorandum written by the director of personnel to the president of the Cedar Corporation.
"It would be a mistake to rehire the Good-Taste Company to supply the food in our employee cafeteria next year. It is the second most expensive caterer in the city. In addition, its prices have risen in each of the last three years, and it refuses to provide meals for people on special diets. Just last month three employees complained to me that they no longer eat in the cafeteria because they find the experience 'unbearable.' Our company should instead hire Discount Foods. Discount is a family-owned local company and it offers a varied menu of fish and poultry. I recently tasted a sample lunch at one of the many companies that Discount serves and it was delicious-an indication that hiring Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction."

Criticizing the high price and dissatisfaction of three employees of the Good-Taste Company, providing the personal experience of tasting in Discount , the author suggests that the corporation should hire the latter for supplying food. However, since the evidence is insufficient and the comparison is not scientific enough, the suggestion is completely open to doubt.
To begin with, even the prices of Good-Taste Company really higher than the others, it does not mean that it should not be rehired. It is entirely possible that the higher prices are caused by especially outstanding services. The author should provide information about the market position of this company, since the opinions of customers are the most credible judgments. Perhaps, their ever rising prices are resulted by their improving quality and better reflection of customers. In addition, the author fails to offer any information about the prices of the Discount serves. Maybe their prices are also very high, or even higher than those of Good-Taste Company. Without carefully analyzing and comparison, the author should no criticize the high prices of the Good-Taste Company.
Furthermore, the author should not depend too much on the complaints of just three employees. Their opinions are not representative enough to be treated as the evidence for bad services of Good-Taste Company. The author should give more views of the majority of employees. Maybe the three persons are just those who have special demands on diets, and their complaints are just caused by their personal reasons, while having nothing to do with the overall appearance of the company. Also, the author should not evaluate the service of the company just relying on the situation of last month. In short, the author needs to provide us more information about the evaluations of the everyday services of Good-Taste Company, which offered by more people.
Moreover, the author should not unwarrantedly conclude that the Discount surly serves better than other companies. The author fails to conduct a survey, which reveal the preference of the employees towards the food. It is entirely possible that most of them have no interests in fish and poultry. Then just providing the personal experience of tasting in Discount, the author cannot conclude that food offered by this company is delicious. To bolster his conclusion, the author needs to invite more people to have a try. Then, even if the food is really delicious, it does not follows that Discount will lead to improved employee satisfaction. Since more factors should be considered, such as outstanding services, good prestige, and the quality of food. Thus, the author needs to provide more detailed information about Discount besides his or her own evaluation.
In sum, before giving suggestion, the author should provide more representative and comprehensive information of both the Good-Taste Company and Discount, including food tasting, services, and quality of food. What's more, the author should carefully acknowledge the preference of employees of Cedar Corporation, in order to pursue more satisfactions. |
