Nowadays, there are increasingly people doubting about that weather the greatness of individual can be evaluated by their contemporaries. Greatness, in my opinion, whose definition is feat made by individual that can greatly influence the whole society in positive respects, can not only be decided by the posterities of individual but contemporaries of individual as well.
There is no denying the fact that the greatness of individual can undoubtedly be decided by their posterities, since some of feats of individual may be effect on the whole society only centuries later, which these can not be seen by their contemporaries. The greatness of scientists, which is sometimes so abstruse that be realized after dozens of years or even hundreds of years later, can only be evaluated by their posterities. For example, the theory of relativity, which proposed by Einstein, the celebrated physics, cannot be assented by majority of people at first, however, it was regarded as the most effective and important discoverer in world after many years. John Nash, one of greatest mathematicians, owned Nobel Praise at the age of 78 for the reason that his Game theory, which was proposed when he was a young man and found to be quite useful when he became an old man. Therefore it is obvious that the greatness of scientists can be decided by posterities, since discovers of scientists are often profound and cannot affect society immediately.
Artists, such as musicians and painters, whose greatness usually be resolved by posterities, fill enjoyment on our sprits aspects forever. For instance, Picasso, who had painted quite a few abstract paintings, was not famous when he was alive, yet, his paintings turned to be extremely valuable after he died and was considered as the most preeminent abstract paintings in the world. The greatness of artist, which represents pith of artists’ devotion of all lives, can be summed up by their posterities.
However, in the realm of some aspects, contemporaries of individual can make decision on their greatness. Decisions of politicians, such as legislation of laws, the establishing diplomatic relations, polices about economics, always play enormous role on society immediately. For example, Franklin Roosevelt, which is regarded as the only one president that continually in office for four times, made a series of decision called New Deal that helped economic of America recover after the Great Depression. With the New Deal, the society in America had self-confidence again, and the greatness of Roosevelt was assented by Americans soon.
In literature, writers’ greatness can be assessed by contemporaries as well. Dumas, who wrote The Count of Monte-Cristo and The Three Musketeers, was highly praised just after these books had published. Charles Dickens, writer of David Copperfield and A Tale Of Two Cities, received lots of high praises from contemporaries. Therefore, in literature aspects, contemporaries can determine the greatness of individual.
All in all, it is disputable that the greatness of individual can be determined by posterities, the contemporaries of individual can make decision on that of individual as well. |
