The speaker contends that people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books, which means that reading books is not as important as it was for people’s acquiring knowledge. In general, I agree with the assertion. For the reason that, with the development of technique, television and some other media have taken some of the place of books.

The first reason that why I generally agree with the statement has to do with the inevitability of development. Just as the relationship between E-mail and conversional letter, television as the new technique to disseminate knowledge will partly instead of books. And that is the truth cannot be ignored.

Furthermore, compared with books, television has its own advantages. For example it is more vivid than books. Television can turn the stable knowledge into animated pictures with the dubbing. We may talk a lot about the process of childbirth; but if you see it, you will totally understand it and never forget it. After all, only when abstract turn to concrete, things can be accepted more easily. Televisions just make up the disadvantage of books. Moreover, televisions can give live broadcast to everyone who is watching them. The information given by television usually is the latest one. The rapid speed of television is books cannot catch up with.

Nevertheless, books as tools which transit knowledge has exist a long history as more than 2000 years. The importance of books cannot be overlooked. Books attributed to the knowledge’s carrying on. It is more extensive and deep than television. So books will never be replaced.

In sum, both of the televisions and books have their own advantages and disadvantages. But with the development of technique, televisions will conquer their shortcomings in the future; and maybe someday they can became some vivid encyclopedias.
