TOPIC: ISSUE48 - "The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
As the speaker asserts that the most crucial role in the process of history is not played by the elite, but by the mass people who have been overlooked when studying the history. However, I cannot agree with this assertion simply, as in my mind, both of them propelled the development of history together and it is impossible to identify who are more important than the other.
Admittedly, the most significant events and trends in history have great relationship with the famous few. Ranging from the emperors to the nowadays leaders, from the scientists to the artists, they all have great effects on the development of the history and impel its advance. Newton's three laws of mechanics and laws of gravity, as well as the theory of relativity of Einstein, are the monument in the development of technology and science. Besides, it was Gandhi who carried out the nonviolent disobedience and finally got the independence of India from the Britain. What's more, Medieval artists, Leonardo da Vinci, Raphael, Michelangelo, who are the symbols of the Renaissance are famous not only for their excellent practice but for their profound reflection on the nature of the material worlds. Thus, in this sense, the famous few play a very important role in the history and it is unsurprisingly that their names are passed down and remembered by us.
However, groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten are also significant on the development of the history. Our Chinese ancestors having came up with the idea that “people being the most important” ever since the ancient days, believe that the progress and development of a society hinge on the talents and supports of the majority of the people. Without them, any significant events or trends can never be put out only by the strength of the famous few. Let us take the Great Pyramid, which is one of the Seven Wonders of the World for instance. As materials noted, the Great Pyramid took more than a total of 20000 people to do the work of carrying. Unfortunately, all their names were forgotten while only the owner, King Hhufu was well known. The same as the Chinese anti-aggression wars, without the Chinese people’s unyielding efforts to resist the foreign aggression, it’s hard to gain national liberation only by the leadership of Dr.Sun Yat-sen or Mao Zedong. So we can say that all the famous few are brought about by the trends of their times, and it is the groups of people standing behind the famous few that actually and ultimately push the advancement of the history.
Actually, too much emphasis on the individuals does no well to our understanding of the history. As we know, history is a combination of the individuals and groups both playing their alternative parts on the history: the famous few usually are the leaders and have more deeper insights about the contemporary circumstance than the groups while the groups are usually the support to the leaders. Without the famous few, groups may lose their directions and without the groups, the famous few could only have their plans in their minds. As a consequence, we should put emphasis both on the individuals and the groups.
To sum up, more common people create the history while the famous few stand on the characteristics and features of the history. So neither of them should be ignored in the study of the history.
