题目：ISSUE 114 - "Humanity has made little real progress over the past century or so. Technological innovations have taken place, but the overall condition of humanity is no better. War, violence, and poverty are still with us. Technology cannot change the condition of humanity."

The statement asserts that in the past century, while technology makes great progress, but the humanity has little change. I agree with that there still exists war, violence, and poverty in the world of some places. However, it does not mean that our humanity has made little real progress over the past century or so. Actually, the well-being of human has advanced extensively.

Admittedly, war, violence and poverty are still with us. In the Middle East, the war happens nearly everyday. The war leads that many people lose their family, relatives, even their lives. It also inhibits the development of location. The urbanization brings comfortable living conditions to us, at the same time, the rate of crime has increased and family violence occurs almost in every city. In Africa, AIDS threats people's lives, and so many children cannot eat a good dinner. These phenomena exist at every corner of our world, which follow that our humanity has little real progress in the past century on the surface.

Actually, our humanity is changing associated with the technological progress. When it comes to political field, from the totalitarian governors to current democratic governments, the people have more rights and ways to participate in the politics. Through election, we can choose the one to be our president. By the masses media, we can supervise the governments to carry out their promises to their people. In contrast, these are all impossible at ancient time, everything is decided by the dictator, and the people have no rights to say "NO".

With respect to the well-being of the society, people enjoy more convenience than ever before. In order to maintain the stability of the society, the governments offer the system which pays money to people who lose their jobs to maintain their living, and offer insurance to retired people, making them enjoy their lives after they retire from the works. Even more, the system renders the people have the treatment when they suffer severe illness. These priorities cannot be enjoyed by the ancient people. These are products of the advanced stage in the human evolution.

On the other hand, I agree that the technology naturally cannot change the humanity; only human selves can make progress to the humanity. The bad phenomena around us are not due to the technology, but depend on the human. The greed and aggression of human result in the many social problems. Like the Iraq War, the United States is in order to occupy the oil market, it launches the war. Furthermore, the technology saves people from the repeated brain tasks and heavy laboring work. The technology naturally cannot improve the humanity, but it makes people have more time then stop to rethink the humanity. In reality, we are living much better than ever before.

In sum, from what I have discussed above, we can draw a conclusion that although the war, violence, and poverty are still with us, we should have a optimistic attitude toward the humanity, we must see that there are a large amount of progress about humanity. And though the technology does little to our humanity, but it can provide more time for us to improve or humanity.
