Issue50 loveaw】

TOPIC: ISSUE50 - "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
WORDS: 636        TIME: 0:45:00          DATE: 2007-2-21
I fundamentally agree with the claim that various faculty should spend time working outside the academic world in professions with reference to the curriculum they teach for the purpose of improving the quality of instruction at the college and university level. However, when they engage in various relevant vocations, they should be concerned with the regular instruction at university and college in the mean time.

To begin with, one reason why all faculty should spend time working in professions relevant to the courses they teach is that instruction must serve society and practice after all. That is to say, instruction must cater to social and professional needs in that what faculty teach must be able to be applied to practice and solve various problems arising in diverse professions after all. In my view, the quality of instruction at the college and university level, to a great degree, lies on whether the faculty can instruct a wealth of students, who will benefit society in the future, how to apply the knowledge learned from the courses to the practice effectively. Through working outside the academic world in professions with reference to the curriculum the faculty teach, they can be more familiar with the actual need of the professions and application of the knowledge. Consequently, they can better teach students how to apply the knowledge to practice and therefore naturally improve the quality of instruction. In contrast, how can the quality of instruction be ensured and improved if all faculty simply confine themselves to the academic world without acquainting themselves with related professions and community?

The second reason why all faculty should work in professions relevant to the curriculum they teach is that practice is a good source of new knowledge and academic achievements, which will go a long way with improving the quality of instruction. As we all know, most of knowledge and techniques come from people's work and practice in daily life. The quality of instruction will be ensured and improved to the extent that the faculty can impart more new knowledge and skills to students. Thus, in order to acquaint themselves with more new knowledge and skills with reference to the courses they teach, the faculty should engage themselves in working outside the academic world in relevant vocations. The faculty in computer science department of Standford University, for instance, is often concerned with the development of the information technology industry and participates in development and design of the new computer devices as well as computer software, which leads Standford University to be one of the best universities in the world, especially the computer science department.

While working outside the academic world in professions with reference to the curriculum the faculty teach can exert a positive and profound influence on the improvement of the quality of instruction, we cannot lay too much emphasis on practice, ignoring the importance of regular instruction. It is regular instruction at university and college that can ensure students to learn fundamental knowledge and skills, which plays a significant part in the quality of instruction. Spending too much time in working outside the academic world in relevant professions will naturally waste the faculty's a great deal of time and energy, which will have a negative effect on the quality of instruction.

In sum, in order to improve the quality of instruction, not merely should the faculty pay enough attention to the academic world and the students' academic performance but they should also engage themselves in the professions relevant to the courses they teach on the ground that both regular instruction and work in relevant professions conduce to improve the quality of instruction.

To begin with, one reason why all faculty should spend time working in professions relevant to the courses they teach is that instruction must serve society and practice after all[毕竟? That is to say, instruction must cater to social and professional needs in that what faculty teach must be able to be applied to practice and solve various problems arising in diverse professions after all. In my view, the quality of instruction at the college and university level, to a great degree, lies on whether the faculty can instruct a wealth of students, who will benefit society in the future, how[应该和instruct对应, 去掉how ] to apply the knowledge learned from the courses to the practice effectively. Through working outside the academic world in professions with reference to the curriculum the faculty teach, they can be more familiar with the actual need of the professions and application of the knowledge. Consequently, they can better teach students how to apply the knowledge to practice and therefore naturally improve the quality of instruction. In contrast, how can the quality of instruction be ensured and improved if all faculty simply confine themselves to the academic world without acquainting themselves with related professions and community?[这段全是论证,建议举个例子说得更清楚~~]

In sum, in order to improve the quality of instruction, not merely should the faculty pay enough attention to the academic world and the students' academic performance but they should also engage themselves in the professions relevant to the courses they teach on the ground that both regular instruction and work in relevant professions conduce to improve the quality of instruction.

statement

我个人认为不能完全同意issue,it depends on the subjcets.Researches on pure thoery like mathmatics is dispensable to be combined with practice.
