207. "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are."
1. I agree with the speaker insofar as one purpose of ritual and ceremony in today’s world is to preserve cultural identity. 2. Nevertheless, preserving cultural identity cannot be the only purpose of ritual and ceremony. E.g. facilitate discussions or competition such as Olympic games 3. Nor are ritual and ceremony the only means of preserving cultural identity. 16:34-17:27 words:537 感觉越来越不会写ISSUE了,这篇的思路完全抄袭的别人的,sigh…
Although people have been used to hundreds of rituals and ceremonies existing in this world, plenty of people are still puzzled with the actual purpose of them. It should be admitted that they have helped with preserving cultural identity, however, never shall I limit either the purpose of rituals and ceremonies or the means of preserving cultural identity in such a tiny range.
Basically, I agree with the speaker that purpose of rituals and ceremonies in today’s world contains preserving cultural identity. Through celebrating momentous days in a range of nation or wider, the certain group of people show uniform towards the same event, perform alike with each other, and at the same time think about the unique thing. In such a case, these people can feel familiar with each other and thus accept as well as identify with each other. For example, China is a huge nation containing fifty-six different peoples. However, such a collage never shows conflicting against each other that often as Pakistan, which has far less peoples and much smaller population. Why does the case exist against our common sense that more peoples will lead to more conflicts? It can be explained by the large amount of ceremonies and rituals in China. Aside from vital ceremonies frequently including dress parades on the National Day, the spring festival in China drives all people in China together enjoying evening programs on television, eating dumplings, playing firecrackers and so forth. The air of happiness hangs over the whole country, including every person no matter which people he is.
Nevertheless, never shall we limit the purpose of rituals and ceremonies in such a narrow scope. There are plenty of ceremonies which have quite a different function as they exist. For example, the Olympic games, which drives the whole world all together even though the purpose is not to preserve the world’s identity. Through the civil attention on the Olympics, people are engaged in the exercises and competitions to obtain the costful gold medal. Such ceremonies provides an accentuation on the competitions with each other and on the importance of the body exercises which facilitates the health level of the whole world.
Similarly, nor can we arbitrarily define that rituals and ceremonies to be the only way of preserving cultural identity. Education plays a significant role in preserving cultural identity as a good example. Different peoples share the same content of education such as history of the nation, language current throughout the nation as well as politics applicable in the whole country. In such way, people are naturally implanted similar viewpoints with each other, and easily get resonated from each other. Moreover, the regime of a nation will help to keep the cultural identity as well, which is even more common. Through allowing people from different peoples to participate in the process of making political decisions, peoples concern about the fortune of the same country unaffectedly.
To sum up, it is too parochial to assert that rituals and ceremonies’ function is equal with the purpose of preserving cultural identity. We should take other important purpose of rituals and ceremonies. At the same time, nor should we opinionated judge that that is the only way of preserving cultural identity. |
