Scandals-whether in politics, academia, or other areas-can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

Interestingly, scandals, which are definitely negative things, can have positive effect. They are useful because they can attract public attention and bring in effective response, and the impact of scandals may be even greater than the eloquent speeches of the speakers and the ambitious plans of the reformers.

Scandals usually are used to refer to something committed by celebrities or institutions, which can be immoral or illegal. And one of their characteristics is that they are unexpected because the one or the ones who have done them always appear quite good or at least normal. A scandal is just like a stone thrown into a lake, rippling the quiet lake surface. Generally speaking, astonishment is the first response of public towards such kind of things, and what is next may be indignation. Three years ago, there was a scandal in academia in my country: a celebrated professor in one of the top universities was found to have plagiarized the work of some foreign scholar. After this scandal was publicized, attention was taken all over the country and many people condemned such kind of behavior. Discussion lasted and more deep problems were revealed: it was found that piracy was not a minor behavior in academia and even some scholars in the national academy had done such things. This scandal thus exposed some very serious problems lying underneath the academic field. As a matter of fact, scandals are merely the outside part of an iceberg; when they come out of water, people see them and thus get aware of the problems that have existed for long. Therefore, it is the scandal that helps people to realize how serious the problems have been and forces people to try to settle them. As for the example mentioned before, after this scandal, more and more people raised their hands to join in the team of protecting the honesty and sanctity of academia. So we can see the usefulness of scandals in revealing problems and impelling solutions.

Once something unexpected happens, especially of those who are famous, people usually are eager to know more. On the other hand, since famous dpeople always show the public positive images, the contradiction of negative behaviors make people even more indignant. As a result, the consensus would impose even greater pressure on the solution on the problems. This is why scandals can surpass speakers and reformers in focusing public attentions: generally speaking, it is not so easy for people to accept new ideas, even though the ideas are brought by promising speeches of the speakers; and it is difficult for reformers to make change to the present situations because those whose benefit is to be threatened would do whatever they can to handicap the reform. It is the common attention that scandals provoke that cause the power of settling the problems.

Scandals themselves are not welcomed because they are misdeeds, however, we should still admit their merits of impelling the solutions of some problems. Actually, as various problems are bound to exist, scandals would surely occur when problems accumulate to a certain extent. However, we should never rely on them to make our society better---speakers and reformers are the major power to do so and their influence should never be overlooked.
