History is to humanity what memory is to a human being. It endows the human race with a certain identity, without which we will feel lost in the universe like an amnesiac human being in an empty street. Therefore the study of history has significance far beyond any practical use. It provides a record of the past, a perception of the present, and a prospect of the future.

"The historical sense," says T.S.Eliot, "involves a perception, not only of the pastness of the past, but of its presence." True. The human race being the only civilized one we have known hitherto, we have no frame of reference in which to see our present motion other than our own history. It is in the study of history that we see the way we have come through, what we have achieved, and what we have lost. It is in the study of history that we see the vicissitudes that have taken place, in what aspects we have made progress, and in what others setbacks. Thus our perception of the present consists of not merely facts, but also their development and significance. The study of history furnishes us with the rules of how things evolve and the criteria to estimate the evolvements.

The study of history, therefore, can help us avoid old mistakes, by showing us the aftermath of them in the past. The disastrous effects of nuclear bombs in Japan have led to the Nuclear Test Ban Treaty. The tragedy depicted in Rachel Carson's Silent Spring awakened our concerns on the ecology and the environment. On the contrary, negligence to history may incur failure. In 1942, the Nazi army invaded the Soviet Union with light packs and was battered by the severe winter, which is a striking resemblance with Napoleon's defeat in Russia more than a century before. With a knowledge of history, we may avoid repeating such mistakes.

The study of history is also a source of inspiration by revealing ancient glories. From studies of ancient Greek and Roman culture, renaissant artists absorbed the reverence for humanity to free themselves from the bondage of religion, while neoclassic artists took in the pursuit for reason and order to repel the ornateness of rococo arts. Not to mention the numerous literary works involved with ancient arts. As the achievement of human endeavors, ancient glories often have value beyond their times, and can inspire us to see and create the glories of our times.

Moreover, the study of history always evokes our aspiration for the future. The Declaration of Independence never fails to arouse the hope for a better society, and the small step of Neil Armstrong never fails to arouse the prospect of another giant leap for mankind. Likewise, there is no history so glorious that it does not kindle the longing for a more magnificent future.

All in all, the significance of history studies goes far beyond any immediate, practical use. It reveals to us where we are from, where we are, and where we are going, and guides us throughout the torrent of human endeavors.

例子很多,很多我都不知道,真羡慕脑子里有这么多材料

感觉段与段之间最好多点衔接词,什么to begin with, in addition....
