Issue105 "The true strength of a country is best demonstrated by the willingness of its government to tolerate challenges from its own citizens."

The speaker asserts that whether the government can tolerate the challenges from the citizens illustrates the true strength of it. This assertion takes both the citizens and the government and the relationship between these two into account when the speaker is trying to measure the strength of a country. To a large extend I agree with the speaker while I would like to address some disagreements.

One reason why I stand by the speaker's assertion is that nowadays, democracy is the increasingly emphasized in every corner, and whether the citizens can express their dissatisfactions and recommendations to the government, and whether the government can solve these problems and improve itself to satisfy it citizens inflects the degree of democracy and the respect to the human rights.
We will never forget the Martin Luther King Junior's struggle for the rights of every citizen. Those citizens gathered together to go against the government because their willingness to be equally treated was ignored by the government.

For another thing, the government is not defined as the institution that rules its citizens arbitrarily but an organization established to make the society more suitable for the survival of its citizens, so the willingness of the members of the city must be taken in to account. As the society consists with hundreds of thousands individual citizens and the government is supposed to benefit the majorities in the city, if not, the remarkable strength of dissatisfaction, agony and grief may overthrow the government. The history of China can give us a lesson. Many dynasties in the history of China disappeared, not for the reason of invasion of other countries but revolts of the angry citizens, because the government had ruled and oppressed them so severely. So came the corruption of a dynasty.

In addition, the citizens are endowed with the right and obligation to express their willingness to the government, or no progress can be expected in the society. If the citizens in a country are too obedient and complying to the government totally, the government would never realize where the problems lie in and what the ideal model of the society is, hindering the improvement and development. The prosperity of the US may not appear if the citizens are always taking things as they are and give no suggestions to the government. Thanks to the expressions of their willingness, can the government realize the needs and requires, which may be an important reason for the development of the nation.

However, we should not overlook the possibility that if the citizens can go against the government randomly, taking for no responsibility for their expressions of opinions, and the government accept or tolerate all of them, the situation might be in a total chaos. There should be some rules when administrate a city or a country and the government should not be too weak to put up with all the movements and expressions or to satisfy all the willingness of its citizens, if so, the coming of the destruction of the peaceful society is impending.

In sum, we should attempt to seek for the balance between the citizens and government and, at the same time, the government should learn from the history and summarize the degrees to tolerate the challenges from the citizens. Only in this precondition, can the society develop healthily and can all the members in it live a happy and satisfactory life.
