Issue 208: “The way people look, dress and act reveals their attitudes and interests. You can tell much about a society’s ideas and values by observing the appearance and behavior of its people.”
Words: 473 Time: 50minutes
Generally speaking, the experience and behavior of people can sometimes reveal the society's ideas and values. We can get much information by noticing the habits of look, dress and action to research the culture, politics, economy and other aspects of the society. However, this outer information is not the accurate criterion to judge the society's value and ideas, more detailed information should used.
First, we can get some useful information about a society by observing the appearance and behavior. It is true that the individual's outer experience and behavior are influenced by the society's development level, economical environment, socialization extent and mainstream thought. So the people in Tang dynasty wore much modern costumes compared to the ancestors and behaved more active, with smile hung on their face, which relates to the prosperous society, diverse culture and compared society, and this may give some implications to explain the popularity of the Tang suit now. What is more, after a experience to some African countries, you can feel the serious poor condition and feel the deep desire of the people of those countries for food, clothes, steady living condition. Obviously, in these African countries, the societies' ideas and values are how to develop the country and deserve poverty, hunger, illness, conflict and so on, which influence the people's experience and behavior profoundly.
However, we should not treat the experience and behavior of people as the only criterion to know about the society, in other worlds, the conclusion of this method is sometimes problematic. We can say the society's value surely influences its people, but the reverse saying is not standable all. After all, the individual can not stand the whole society. Especially in some high developed countries, which have complex culture and values, the diversity of these countries depends the complications of people's experience and behavior. For instance, we can observe a group of people who living miserable lives and behave conservatively, but we can not conclude that the circumstance in America is bad. This just likes a piece of leaf in a flourish tree. We can not blindly conclude the whole just by his a component. But we can choose some representative samples to analyze the society and using the characters of the samples to repute the whole society.
Like the analysis above, people's appearance and behavior is just one respects of the society, therefore we must use other information to help our judgment for the society' values and ideas, like some records, some important events, etc. This deep information is useful to research the society widely and thoroughly.
In conclusion, the statement is partial true. Sometimes people's experience and behavior can represent the society's values and ideas to some extend. But if we want to make a more integral and correct conclusion, we must take more factors of the society in to account.
Issue 50: "In order to improve the quality of instruction at the college and university level, all faculty should be required to spend time working outside the academic world in professions relevant to the courses they teach."
I partially agree with the statement.
1: This measure truly has some advantages:
a: Help the faculty put the knowledge into practice, which help them comprehend the knowledge earned from books well and teach students more effectively.
b: What they lean from books can not keep pace with the true condition, maybe some knowledge what they learn is out of date. This measure helps them update what they learn
c: They can gain some experience from practice which help them instruct students more vividly and improve the interest for learning.
d: Some courses must be combined with practice deeply, like MBA,MPA.
2: However, there is no need to require all faculty to join this measure. The normal teaching activity can be disrupted, some courses need not to put into practice, like PE. If do like this, it will be a waste of money and energy.
Issue: "Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.”
1. It is true that rituals and ceremonies can help to define a culture. They form some traditions and become components of culture. In China, there is a ceremony to memorize the ancestors in Qingming Day Festival year.
2. They do not mean that they are indispensable for people. Some rituals and ceremonies have historical limits. Though they were popular in the past, they are not adapted now. For instance, some ceremonies in the past are used to dispel the cruel animals, celebrate a harvested year or pray rain after long dry.
