Issue 103: “The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives.”
Words: 500 Time: 47 minutes
History is a mirror, from which we can know more about the past and learn experience to make progress and avoid the same mistake as the ancestors. This useful meaning of history attracts us to make deep research on it, though these roles are not direct to our daily lives. In order to keep the integrity, we must research all aspects of history because of its correspondent.
It is true that to know past is to make construct our future better and the study just supply us adequate and vivid information to know about the past. Generally, the findings from the past can give some implication about the history. For instance, a pot of Shang dynasty in China can help the historian to know about the living habit, the economy level, the culture, etc, however, this help can not be supplied except this vivid material. Another example of this point is some small segments found in very early tombs, which help us to master information about the formation and origination of our language. There is no one living from past until now to tell us anything about the past except studying history. It is history that tells us the origination of our culture, language, and even ourselves.
Generally, most of the study of the history is not directly relating to our daily lives, but this does not imply the value of history fades for this and there is no need for us to spend time and energy to study it. In some people's eyes, the study of the origination of our language is not valued, as they most concern the eating, clothes, commendation, which is the necessity of their daily lives. But they make a mistake with short sight. To study the origination of history is in order to develop it better and use it better. This is just the duty of a linguist.
What is more, history can provide us some valuable experience which supply us some implication when meeting choice and lessons to avoid making same mistakes as ancestors. By study the event, we can understand why some countries can stand so long while some collapse in a short period, why a prosperous period can appear in some period and how the government should to keep the development of the country. For instance, after study the history of the empire of Roma, we can get some implications why it can be so strong at that time and why it collapsed at last, which are very precious guidance for current governors. Another example is about Hitler, the study of which can inform the later that peace is the persistence of the world, while any invading or military thought must be abandoned.
In sum, the study of history is very meaningful by helping us know about the past, recognize ourselves, learn experience and draw lessons to avoid going some distorted ways. So whether it directly relates to our daily lives, it is valuable for us to make research about it.
Issue 88: “Technologies not only influence but determine social customs and ethics.”
Syllabus:
1. Social customs are handed down from generation to generation, which convey some thoughts and wishes can not be determined by technologies easily. There is no causal relationship between them. The aim of technology is to serve us well, while the social customs are components of our lives and no inevitable conflict between them. For instance, the custom of Chinese Spring Festival and the Christmas Day in western countries are not disappeared as the rapid development of technology.
2. It is true that technologies bring some changes to the social customs. As the convenience and the strong function of technologies are felt by people, some modern elements are added to social customs. Return to the example of Chinese Spring Festival, nowadays, some people are pleased to make tourism with their family members or have parties in hotels, not just gathering home as past.
3. However, technologies hardly change ethics. Generally, ethics are considered as laws to some extent which force people to follow them strictly. |
