Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.

There is an on-going debate over the effect of scandals. Some people may maintain that the scandals play no positive role on the progress of our society, because scandals always disclose the ugly aspect of the society. In my point of view, I concede that scandals can play important roles in many areas, because they focus our attention on problems in ways that we have ever noticed.

First of all, in the field of politics, scandals can help to improve our laws, or the government, and improve the politicians themselves. Scandals are always the backdoor and shameful things that are secreted to others. Once these scandals are disclosed, it will be a vital fault to the person who are directly associated with the scandals. But in the social sense, these scandals can help us to review the problems and the reasons that led to the scandals. Thus they can improve our society in this way. An apt illustration to this point involves the Watergate affair. This scandal led to President Nixon's resignation directly, and it also reflected that there are some backdoor events happened inside the government. Imagine that this scandal had not been revealed, and then the citizens of America's benefit would be harmed in some sense.

In addition, in the field of education, the scandals are also playing a positive role in some extent. Education becomes more and more important in our life and people pay much attention on it. Education should be kept fair to every one. Once one has the ability to enter the universities or colleges, and the society should guarantee the fair opportunity to everyone. However, last year a scandal in one of the best universities in China prove that there are some shortages in China’s educational system. Every student who achieved high grade in the Entrance Exam should paid another 20 thousand RMB to some special teachers, otherwise they cannot get their admission. And after this scandal, people can realize the disadvantage of our educational system and make some progress. As a matter of fact, scandals in education sometimes can be an alarm to others and help to keep the education fair to everyone.

Last but not least, in the level of individual, sometimes scandals are useful. Nowadays we can see many scandals about individual, just as politicians, movie stars, singing stars, and so on from TV, Internet and newspaper. And these scandals sometimes can help to enhance the moral in our society. A case in this point is the sexual scandal of Clinton. Although this scandal did not lead to his failure in political life, but it also influenced his reputation in the eyes of Americans. Another case is the scandal of the basketball stars Ker. If we can review this scandal in a right perspective, we would know that it is the society that gives them too much attention and too much money but not give some restraint. And after these scandals, we can introspect some aspects of our society.

In conclusion, there is no easy conclusion to such complex issue. However, due to the reasons mentioned above, we could draw a safe conclusion that in many areas of our society, scandals can be useful, because they focus our attention on some problems that we cannot notice in a common way.
