History teaches us only one thing: knowing about the past cannot help people to make important decisions today.

I disagree with the author's assertion that history is of little use to provide us a guide to make significant decisions today. In my view, history is mirror to our daily life and serves as a tocsin to alarm us not to repeat our mistakes.

In the first place, history serves as a alarm bell to help people make crucial decisions today. History just like a enormous database where we could find precious experience our forerunners gained at the cost of a big loss. For example, World War II, in which the chauvinism in Germany led a great disaster not only to Germans, but also to the whole world, amply illustrates the point of view. Realizing the harm of chauvinism, Germany government takes an effective effort to protect the resurgence of Naziism in all of the aspects of society, and meanwhile alarm whole people to understand the importance of peace in the world. From the example, our great political leaders may learn to carefully address world matters particularly pressing social problem to prevent any disadvantage threatening to world peace.

In the second place, history also leads us not repeat mistakes once occurred past. The point of view was illustrated by the failure to attempt to legislate morality. Prohibition in the 1930s and furthermore, failure in attempt to regulate access to adult material through the Internet guild people not to make the same mistake again, for the reason that the morality stems from certain aspect of human nature, which will not disappear by way of regulation, just like war, hunger, greed , and so forth.  According to history, people should not to do something like that, and pay much more attention to address pressing social problem.

Moreover, history is one of the most aspects of a nation. Because it severs to help people realize their identity. A nation without history make its people lack of identity. Why many countries try their best to discover the origination of the nation, at the expense of addressing other pressing problem of the day? You can find Chinese are pride of their five-thousand-year history: Egyptian glory in not only their long history and also historic treasure, pyramid. Thus people who overlook the use of history ignore whole basic of nation.

Admittedly, excessively appealing to history will hinder people to make a correct decision. Nowadays, with the rapid pace of life and advancement of society, there are a lot of changes in the world which is of great difference than before. Just neglecting of these changes and uniquely resting on history experience will certainly result in failure. A telling example comes into my mind. Soviet Union regardless of world changes carried plan-economy policy all the time, which served to help develop Soviet economy greatly, ended up with disorganization. On the contrary, China realizing the trend of development in the world implements Open Policy since 1978s, and as a result China gradually is becoming world economy motor leading progress of world economy. Thus, Thus, only depending on historic experience regardless of enormous world changes leads people to make significant decision incorrectly.  

To sum up, history as a part of a nation serves to help us recognize our identity and also contribute to alarms us not to make repeat mistakes again. Yet appealing to history excessively neglecting rapid changes in the world will mislead you to failure.
