Issue48 (623words, 45mins)_
"The study of history places too much emphasis on individuals. The most significant events and trends in history were made possible not by the famous few, but by groups of people whose identities have long been forgotten."
When we debate on the issue whether the study of history places too much emphasis on individuals, we may divide into two sides. One side might persist that the significant events and trends in history were made possible major by famous few, while the other side may insist that the groups-the mass which we ignore or forget , determine the development of history. In my point of view, both the individuals and the mass play crucial roles in the history.
First an[and] foremost, it is the individuals who serves as leaders that impact the outcome and trend of an event. History witnessed so many specific examples to support my statement. Lincoln, a most famous president in the history of America, was such a [an] influential leader. In the revolution war, he acted positively to fight for the rights of the black slaves. Inspired by his relief and firm determination, a myriad of blacks joined into the army, which did significant contribution to the ultimate results[victory] of the war. Bill Gate, the former wealthiest man in the world[president of Microsoft and the youngest self-made billionaire], leads his company-software in shrewd perspective. He points out the developing direction of the company and make it a most profitable one. His predictive capacity is the determinant of the success of the company and the whole industry. In the above two events, the individuals’ personality and capacity plays important roles in the events and trends of the past. [可以加点说理,because of their outstanding personal capacity and charm, important individuals usually serve roles of catalysts.]
Secondly, the trends of history will be influenced by some thinkers whose thoughts and theories guide the nation to a direction. What we should always keep in mind is that we are educated by the schools and society. Many thoughts and theories consist of the basic knowledge of us, so does the significant figures. In the big depression, government never confronted so tough a problem than ever before- the unemployment rate was increasing, the economy is depressed, and the currency is inflating. We can hardly imagine the hardness of the lives in that period. Who can save the whole nation from tough experience? A man named Keynes did it. His theory put [puts]governmental intervene in the first place, and suggest the government should expand the public expenditure to reduce the high unemployment rate. The theory turned out to be effective eventually. Consequently, the tends of history were set, America recovered from the big depression rapidly, which ensured a strong national power in the world war two[World War II]. It is the greatest thinker who point out potential methods for a society to choose and thus influence the developing trends of the nation.
Last but not least, we should not neglect the power of the mass. The reason why a country is create originally is that the mass sacrifice their own interests to some degree and let a representative organization to speak for them or make some decisions for them. If the organization which we now name ''government' malfunctions, the mass has the rights to retrieve the power they gave the government and select another more efficient organization to represent their interests. Meanwhile, if a government makes a program, without the cooperation and support of the mass, the program will never be carried out. Who consist of the base a society, who dedicates their efforts and energy to the growth of the economy, who determine the ever-developing society to function smoothly, and who make a government legal one? Definitely, it is the mass. It is the mass who determine the events and trends in history.
All in all, it is reasonable if we put too much emphasis on individuals. Most records available are all concerned with the famous individuals. However, when the records and current people forget the identities of groups of people, we should recognize their crucial roles in the history.
