The speaker claims that people's behavior and appearance can be evidence based on which  the general ideas and values of a society can be judged.   While I admit that people's appearance and behavior , in a large sence ,  serve to indicate the general ideas and values of a society,  I insist that appearances and behavior can not be used as basis(?) in arriving on any firm conclusion about a society's ideas and values.

Generally speaking,  people's appearances and behaviors, to some degree,  can reveal a society's value.   As we all can see that  British gentlemen dress formally,  French people behaves romantically ,  Japanese people dress seriously,  and American people  dress colorfully.   (问一下，算不算雷同？有些篡改电子书的嫌疑) All these differences help us to see the ideas and values each society accepts or values. One interesting phenomenon can be found that  when you compare scientists ,  in the same academic field ,  with the same sex , same age,  if only they are from different  societies,  they usually  have dramatic differences in either appearances and behaviors.   This can be best explained by the culture differences,  the diversified ideas and values each society treasured.  

Supporting example can also be found in the business field.  Take ad as one example.   As business expand its global reach,  business men , especially those from cross national companies,   may find that one advertisement campaign which works very well in one country  doesn't work at all in another.     A jean sells very well in American may simply not sell  in Japan.   Why?  Examined according to my knowledge,  I tend to believe that it is due to the fact that  people's behavior and appearance are in deep connection with their values and ideas.  The ad images which caters to American values well , may simply contradict with people's deeper social values in Japan.   This is where appearances and behaviors matter.

Given that appearances and behaviors do reveal the ideas and values that a society possess,   it is far more from security to say that one can judge a society's values and ideas purely according to what its people dress or behave.    Perhaps,  the dress people choose are not the result of value preference,  but rather , it may be out of some practical consideration.  Such as whether people can afford it, whether it is time bearing, whether there is certain style available or not etc.    If this is the case,  we can not say for sure , that we can judge the value or ideas of a society purely according to appearances and behaviors of its people.

Another reason why I disagree that we can judge a society’s values and ideas according to its people’s appearance and behaviors  is that  people’s appearances and behaviors are,  like fashion,  constantly changing.   A dress which is popular in one period may simply become out dated in another.  A behavior which is thought Ok in one time may simply be viewed as indecent at another.  This phenomenon can be found in nearly every society.

In sum,  people's appearances and behaviors  , in a large sense,  can  reveal  a  society's ideas and values  which help us understand each other.   Yet it is a little too assertive if one tries to find a society's ideas and values by only observing its people's look and behaviors ,  since people's behavior and dress  can be influenced by many  factors, and are constantly changing.

我觉得我的观点还是清楚地:

一方面有一定的道理。
另一方面不能过分依赖appearance和dress.
