I concede that by satisfying human psychological needs that are not addressed by science, certain nonmainstream areas of inquiry as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits are still playing a vital role in society. However, such functions do not justify their existence, considering the negative imposed on our society by such areas and the well-shown trend that science will eventually establish its position by replacing such nonmainstream areas.

The existence of such nonmainstream areas is rooted in human beings' psychological needs--such as the origin of our universe, private future, and craving for miracles--which cannot be explained or realized by modern science. After all, there is no absolute acknowledge for every question, especially those vague ones. Furthermore, the objective and disinterested way in which science follows will never cater to such curiosities by giving a reassuring but arbitrary answers. That is to say, individuals holding such questions have to turn to the nonmainstream areas mentioned above, because the answer offered by such areas just pander to the curious nature of human. For example, modern science cannot foresee the destiny of an individual, while fortune-telling can provide him or her a answer, which is too vague to verify but satisfy the human beings' psychological need for knowing about future ahead. Moreover, such nonmainstream also panders to certain craving of ordinary individuals, such as communicating with their deceased family members, as demonstrated in film—Ghost.

However, such social function of such nonmainstream areas can never justify their survivals, for such areas actually springs from the ignorance of human in the beginning of history and, too often, have negative effect on a society. In fact, it is only because science can still not disprove the predict by such areas that we call these nonmainstream areas so, while they are just obsolete remains of superstition in early human history, which means they are doomed to fade in our modern society. Therefore we should not overstate their importance. After all, by doing so we risk the social achievement by science during several centuries and ignoring its negative influences on society. In fact, such nonmainstream--such as psychic and paranormal pursuit is often associated with certain criminal, say, deception or cheating, furthermore, by trusting fortune-tellers' arbitrary predictions blindly, which are often too optimistic, its credulous audience are likely to treat their own destiny passively and fails to make substantial effort to bring about a better life.

In my observation, science will surely empower human beings to get rid of the trouble from such nonmainstream areas, or rather remains of superstition through two ways. To begin with, with its further advancement, science can offer a more distinct and reassuring answers to satisfy the psychological need of human beings' curious nature at last. Moreover, one of the most important functions of science is to show human beings the limitation of human knowledge--absolute answers do not exist and human beings pursuit relative certainty by endless effort. Once the mass come to the rationale, the need for absolute answer would be replaced by logical thought. Consequently, such nonmainstream areas will fade out eventually, just as our experiences show.

In final analysis, I concede that nonmainstream areas are still playing an important role in modern society, however, the existence can not justify itself considering the negative they can impose on our society. It is the trend of history that such nonmainstream areas will fade out eventually.
