Are the nonmainstream areas of inquiry such as astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuit vital to the society due to satisfying human needs which mainstream science cannot? The speaker claim so, however, I do not quite agree with the speaker's contention.

First of all, I do concede that the nonmainstream areas of inquiry meet some needs of people. These people can attain psychological comfort from the nonmainstream areas of inquiry. For example, many people are zealous on astrology which developed from ancient Greece. These people usually are not very successful in their life at least currently. They are enthusiastic in the fortune about their constellations written in relative books or posted on the websites, because these books or webs can give them more confidence and comfort. They may feel better and regain the longing to their prospect when the books tell them about their lucky time in the future. At this rate, to some extension, nomainstream areas of inquiry do have positive effect on satisfying someone's special needs.

However, nonmainstream areas of inquiry can take negative influence on us. Let's take fortune-telling as an example. There is no doubt that the destination of a fortune-teller is to make money which is basic for us to live in the community. Therefore, he always tells one about his bright future and rarely says something which is on the back side. They intend to make the listeners more pleasant and then they can get the money more comfortably from the listeners. If the prophets often tell them about how dark their perspective will be, the listeners may lose their temper and leave without any payment. Thus, as a result, people who believe in their fair-sounding words may be over-optimistic about their future. In my opinion, this situation is truly harmful to their prospect. It is possible that they will lose their gumptions. Not only to themselves, but also to the society it does a harm. If everybody in the community do so, our society will cease the development, even reverse. Hence, nonmainstream areas of inquiry can anesthetize the people spirit and affect the society harmfully.

So, in my point of view, mainstream science is really vital to the society. Firstly, science makes our daily lives much better than before. For instance, air-conditioner let us feel cool in the torrid summer and warm in the cold winter. Computers and internet makes the communication more close and vivid when the users are far away from each other. Secondly, in industry, science save not only a lot of time but also our security. When the machine lathe hasn't been invented, many hard work was done by the labors. It was dangerous that many of them was injured even disabled. Nowadays, this situation is rare owing to the modern machine lathe. They can do the jobs which human cannot and is dangerous to the labors. Also, it is more efficient in work than human. Finally, science make the explore of the universe which human have never reached accessible for us. Recently, the space shuttle called Discovery was lunched into the outer space to do some significant researches and explore the unknown world in the infinite universe. In more earlier time, the Apollo made human beings stepped on the moon. All of these are not brought by the nonmainstream areas of inquiry but the mainstream science. Thanks to the science we can now enjoy our happy lives and the society can continue be in progress. Thereby, the truly vital role in our society is not played by the nomainstream areas of inquiry by the mainstream science.

To sum up, I do not deny that the nomainstream areas of inquiry do can meet some needs of people. Nevertheless, undoubtedly, they have negative influence on both people and society because they can make people over-optimistic and lose their enterprises. I strongly believe that mainstream science is truly vital to our society due to its contribution to our lives and the society.
