TOPIC: ISSUE87 - "In any field of inquiry, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries."
WORDS: 561 TIME: 上午 12:45:00 DATE: 2006-8-1
According to the statement, the beginner is more likely than the expert to make important discoveries. This view is shallow, notice history, we may easily to find out that many important discoveries are made by both experts and beginner. In my view, both beginner and expert have their advantages and disadvantages in making discoveries.
On the one hand, the beginner has their own advantages in making discoveries. After all, the beginner is more passional and enthusiastic in the field he engages. As they begin to plunge into new circumstances, everything is curious and fresh to them, which can inspire their enthusiasm and passion to work hard and make efforts to what they do. Furthermore, the new always bring along innovative thinking and new ideas, which is of great significance and profundity for making important discoveries. Unlike the experts, they might not be hedged by too much rules and regulations that it is more likely for them to find new ways for dealing with same situation. For instance, when faced the same situation, the expert would tend to depend on his experience to take traditional and classical method to solve, while for the beginner, he would be more willing to try new way. Sometimes, just because of their willing to try, they happened to make great discoveries. Nevertheless, owing to lack of experience, they might have to face more difficulties than the experts when encountering the same conditions, in other words, lacking experience become the blockage in making discoveries as well.
On the other hand, for the expert, as the beginner, they might also have their advantages and disadvantages in making discoveries. While they are less enthusiastic and passional as the beginner, their experiences enable them to deal with things in a short-cut way. Unlike the beginner, the expert are more skilled in finding out the central point of the issue, then concentrating on this point to solve problem or do further research. For example, in the field of medicine, an old and experienced doctor has ability to diagnose a disease just after listening to the patient's statement, which is far quicker than a new doctor. It is their experiences, accumulated by hundreds of thousands of cases, which make them familiar with every kind of disease. However, like everything else, the experience is not without its problems. Since everything is changing from time to time, the case before may be also different as compared with the present, the expert who fails to consider this point would make mistake as well. Due to their fame and dignity, when they make mistake, people would also accept them as true, which would become a catastrophe at the end. Meanwhile, to the beginner, it is easy to acknowledge that they are wrong, then reexamining and subsequently correcting the errors. In short, making discoveries is not the only monopoly for the beginner, as is the expert.
Final, we should incorporate the advantages of both the beginner and the expert; at the meanwhile we should be cautious to avoid their disadvantages. First, the beginner should inject new blood to the field they engage, while the experts should impart their valuable experiences to future generations. Only the time a field can progress smoothly and rapidly is when the beginner and the expert go hand in hand.
In sum, from what has been discussed above, we can safely draw the conclusion that we should make the beginner and expert collaborate to make efforts in making discoveries, regardless of who should be responsible for it. |
