TOPIC: ISSUE38
- "In the age of television, reading books is not as important as it once was. People can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books."
WORDS: 123          TIME: 0:17:58          DATE: 2006-3-12

Outlines:
+: We can get much information which is only available through reading books in the past by watching TV. TV has its overwhelming advantage over book in recording vividly the scene and process in forms of moving images. For example, chemical reaction process.
-: However, television is not capable of recording and express mental activities in people's minds.
-: Moreover, reading book is more efficient that watching television in acquiring knowledge, even the content is the same. We are able to read books at any time, in any places. Also, we can just skim through the book in a short time, or scrutinize the book, trying to understanding every detail, depending on our different purpose. But watching television is a passive mode.

The speaker asserts that the prevailing of television makes reading books less important than it once was because people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. Admittedly, television is capable of recording vividly what happens in life so that we can learn much from watching it. However, much content in books is not accessible through television and reading books has its own advantages in the purpose of learning.

It is true that TV is capable of displaying scene and process written in books in forms of moving images, which facilitates us to understand the knowledge more impressively and directly. Thanks to the advances of science and technology, we are now able to see by ourselves what is happening in distant places in the world. The tourism program on the TV enables us to watch the landscapes in other countries as we were there in person, and to understand their culture more profoundly. Another case that would best illustrate the point is the visualized teaching in science courses where students watches particularly designed animation on how chemical reaction evolved, which was traditionally expressed by inscrutable symbols and chemical equations. By giving us direct veiwsight of what happens during the process we concern, television has overwhelming advantages towards books in learning that.

However, there is much substance in books that can not be recorded and displayed by television. Books are written in the same languages through which we think and deduce and to deliver our idea and spirit, which can not be shot by lens of television. Television can not, For instance, record the laws of math and physics, which are based on reasoning and illation. When we are learning thoughts and ideas of great psychologists, television can either lend any help. Therefore, reading books still serves as the best and, as a matter of fact, the unique way to record and learn mental activities of human intellect.

Furthermore, reading books is an active process of learning in which we can obtain knowledge in various ways for different purposes, while learning through television is rather passive. With a book in hand, we can read it in classrooms, on buses and trains, in bed before sleep, and almost any places and any times as we wish. Also, we can read the book with scrutiny, focusing on every detail to completely perceive the content, or we could readily skim it over in a short time to find out just some general ideas. All of these vary depending on our purpose and environment. However, watching television is a passive process of learning in which we have to see through what are provided in the time settled by the TV station, wasting most of the time. So reading book is so efficient a way to learn that its importance in acquiring knowledge and information does not decline in antime when television are so popular.

In conclusion, we can learn much knowledge and information with the respect of visualization. But reading books is still of crucial importance for it is superior to television in recording human spirit and intellect, which is indispensable to development of our society.

The speaker asserts that the prevailing(我怎么就没想到用这个词哩) of television makes reading books less important than it once was because people can learn as much by watching television as they can by reading books. However, much content in books is not accessible through television and reading books has its own advantages in the purpose of learning.

However, there is much substance(我觉得这个词不准确) in books that can not be recorded and displayed by television. Books are written in the same languages through which we think and deduce and to(这个地方语法上有点不通) deliver our idea and spirit, which(一般如果前面有,which是指代前面一个分句的) can not be shot by lens of television. Television can not, For(for) instance, record the laws of math and physics, which are based on reasoning and illation. When we are learning thoughts and ideas of great psychologists, television can either lend any help.(没有仔细分析原因,电视节目也可以介绍laws and ideas) Therefore, reading books still serves as the best and, as a matter of fact, the unique way to record and learn mental activities of human intellect.(这段TS是说电视不能记录某些东西但书可以,意思我理解了,但我觉得论述还不是很充分)

In conclusion, we can learn much knowledge and information with the respect of visualization. But reading books is still of crucial importance for it is superior to television in recording human spirit and intellect, which is indispensable to development of our society.

小改了一下。在WORD里。
我的I 38:
In the era of rapid social and technological change leading to life complexity, the television plays a more and more important role in the people’s life. However, in my opinion, in the age of the television, reading books is as important as it once was no matter how much we can learn from the television.

Admittedly, the television, as one of the most flamboyant invention with highly convenient among the various scientific achievements, exceedingly improves the efficiency of the communication and transmitting of the information and knowledge. Nowadays, watching TV has become a important part of people’s lives, as a main media, which is a great source of political, economic, social, and cultural information for the citizens in many countries. Also it raises our consciousness by bringing to us the latest news and discoveries and extends our horizon by such documentary programs as “National Geographic” and “Discovery”, whose contents are probably otherwise unapproachable in our entire lifetime. With the content it provides only, we enlarge our scope of knowledge and obtain much useful information.

Nevertheless, books as an old way of acquiring information and knowledge still hold strong life force. For such a huge knowledge pool accumulated over centuries, TV could only show a small part of it while the book does the whole such as the classics. By reading, people have the time to think over again a lot of details. Besides, people can read anytime, anywhere, since the books are easy to carry and need no power supply, which make to adaptable to different condition while television is different. You have to have TV, electricity and in some remote poor areas villagers have no such facilities.

Again, we learn some knowledge by reading books which can not be acquired by watching TV. In reading, we become creators, imaging the setting of the story, seeing the facial expressions, and hearing the inflection of the voices. There are one thousand of Hamlets in the eyes of one thousand of readers; television prevents us from thinking deeply into what we watch because of the fixed imagines and sound however, books provide the reader a blank paper on which the reader can depict anything as he or she likes. Reading arouses actively thinking profoundly about so important problems such as the significance of life, the public potential hazards, the past and the future, etc, which are unable to achieve by watching TV. Books, carrying the utmost importance in the inheritance and dissemination of knowledge for all human kind, edify our intelligence and broaden our horizon of the history.

Because of the different advantages of providing knowledge and information, in any time, the books and the television play different role in our lives, especially in the high-tech era. We should absorb what we need not only from the books but also from the modern multimedia such as the TV.

In conclusion, although the books are challenged by modern media including television, Internet, reading books is still as the efficiency, credible way of obtaining as the television.
