88 "Technologies not only influence but actually determine social customs and ethics." [05/30; 06/3]

With the rapid development of technology, we have improved our living conditions to a large extent such as prolonging our lift, saving our time and facilitating the communicative devices. At the same time, our social customs and ethics have changed. Some people argue that technology not only but also determine the social customs and ethics while others do not think so. As far as I am concerned, I firmly support the latter and maintain that it is human society itself but not technology that determines social customs and ethics while technology plays a important role in them.

In the first place, the tradition of human society inherited from generation to generation is a great source of social customs and ethics. Firstly, most of the social customs and ethics are mode of the former rules which is regarded as the norm and the usual life style. As we know, honey is very important to a man, which is because people think most of people are honest and it can help people to communicate in some aspects. At the same time, goodness is a good attribute of a man on the base of the fact that people believe that goodness can give a hand to other people and make others and then the whole world better and better. Secondly, some of the social customs and ethics come from some memorable days or people. For example, there is a festival called Dragon-boat Festival in China, which is to remember Qu Yuan who was a great poet and lived in the warring states of Chinese history. He jumped into a big river to commit suicide on the 5th day of the 5th lunar month because of the fall of his homeland. From then on, Chinese eat a pyramid-shaped dumpling and hold a dragon boat race on this day every year.

In the second place, current social activities take a very important part in social custom and ethics. For example, with the development of economy and the exacerbation of pollution, more and more people become aware of the importance of environment and consider the destruction of it as an unmoral behavior. With the prevalence of computer and the spread of Internet, there is a new norm built in the virtual society, such as the virtual marriage.

Admittedly, technology also plays an important in social custom and ethics although it can't determine them. To begin with, some false idea or custom changed because of the development of technology. In the past, human being always hold blind worship and relate some irrelevant but coincident things when we can not explain the relation of something or their causes, while is a part of our social custom. With science developing, more and more knots are untied and people have a new and full knowledge about them. So some social custom correct its wrong idea. Furthermore, there are a number of new ethics problems as the advancement of society and the development of technology, such as human cloning and biological weapons.


From analyzed above, I think that technology plays a important role in them and that it is human society itself but not technology that determine social customs and ethics.
