Issue207 :
Rituals and ceremonies help define a culture. Without them, societies or groups of people have a diminished sense of who they are.
Culture is rooted in nearly every thing in a society, rituals and ceremonies are typical two forms of any given culture. By conforming to certain rituals and ceremonies, people stand a chance to get closer to know what their society distinguish with others, Who they are , what they are doing, what kind of activity they respect the most etc.
As technology goes fast, the globalization trend is overwhelming. This new trend along with daily accelerating speed of living and working does hamper the preservation and transendention of given culture types , like rituals and ceremonies. We can take an example to see this trend better. I was born in a small village in China, when I was little, lots of traditions about people's marriage, festivals et al can be found abundantly around me. Yet the living habit of people are greatly altered in order to keep pace with the fast speed of economy development. Hence, more and more rituals and ceremonies are being abridged, or totally diminished. This loss is largely due to people's "having no time", rather than people's unwillingness to preserve their culture forms.
It is true that an trend in globalization does seem to diminish the existence of typical culture forms. We can easily find that this loss in culture forms tend to hamper people's self-awareness of their own identity in a society. When mentioned Spanish, we all know the "arena ceremony", when mentioned Japanese , we remember their "cherry festival", and when mentioned China, we all know its "dragon boat festival" et al. All these ceremonies or culture forms tend to help us define what a given culture or society is. One can imagine what it will be alike when all these ceremonies are cancelled or diminished. Culture forms' loss will hamper the pure self-awareness of given culture. It is true that we usually identify ourselves by adhering to certain culture forms, and this might be the most strongest bond that hold a nation, a minority together.
There are even situations where people lost the sense of their own identity while immitating others. Urbanization tends to make all cities world around the same. Youth at the opposite site of the earth now have common languages toward one common topic e.g. Hollywood Movie, Pop Music etc. In China , many citizens don't have a sense of what a culture form stands for, even this culture form is pervaling in the countryside. This situation illustrates vivdly how a dominating culture can influence others and result in cultural assimilation.
In sum, I believe that as the development of technology and globalization tends to be a strong force that drive traditional culture forms away. People's identy about themselves in a given society tend to diminish due to the pressure from above trend. Rituals and ceremonies should be treasured by each society, because they are the strongest civil chord that hold the society together.
