---正文---

The speaker contends that the nonmainstream areas of inquiry could satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science and are vital in society. I agree with the speaker insofar that astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits sometimes could meet certain human needs. However, their potential harm makes these nonmainstream areas of inquiry can never be a vital role in society.

Admittedly, sometimes, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry address certain human needs that the mainstream science could not. In contemporary society, people face more and more stress from every aspect—the jobs, families, friends, and even themselves. We can say that they are making decisions everyday, which maybe directly or indirectly affect their life and their future. Therefore, people may have a common sense that they have the accountability to solve everything well, and if not, they are responsible for it and they would feel depressed, morose, regret and even guilty. In order to avoid such bad feelings or looking for an excuse for the potential poor results, many people turn to these nonmainstream areas of inquiry, trying to shift the burden to these stuffs of nihility. Maybe only through these approaches, could they reach the extrication of soul, which would never happen in front of the mainstream science with logic and reason.

However, no matter how effectively could the nonmainstream areas of inquiry help people relieve the pressure, the potential harm caused by them far outweighs their psychological benefits, so that they could never be a vital role in society. On scientific level, the nonmainstream areas of inquiry may confuse the confines between the science and the non-science, which is extremely harmful to the application and development of science. After all, the astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits are not rooted in reason, just basing on the charlatans’ own conception, or in other words, one of their approaches to making a living. Thus, there are few credibility and persuasion lying in these inquiries. If people overmuch depend on these nonmainstream areas to solve their problems or even apply these methods into the normal science research, the result is out of imagining.

On social level, the potential harm brought about by the nonmainstream pursuits is also can not be ignored. There are always some people attempt to disturb our society through the method of taking advantage of the people’s depending even advocating of the nonmainstream areas of inquiry. The notorious heresy enthralling the followers with the non-scientific approaches is just an example. Falungong, the heresy that prevailed in China several years ago, made its followers share a thought that as long as they believe in Falungong, they need no treatment when they are sick, and they can ascend to heaven after they burn themselves. Obviously, this is the extremity of the nonmainstream pursuits that bring about extraordinary harm to society stabilization and people’s life.

To sum up, I concede that sometimes the nonmainstream areas of inquiry are useful in helping people relieving their stress or just for fun. However, they could never become the vital component in society due to its potential harm to both science and society.

-The speaker contends that the nonmainstream areas of inquiry could satisfy human needs that are not addressed by mainstream science and are vital in society. I agree with the speaker insofar that (最好用总称吧)astrology, fortune-telling, and psychic and paranormal pursuits sometimes could meet certain human needs. However, their potential harm makes these nonmainstream areas of inquiry can never be a vital role in society.

Admittedly, sometimes, these nonmainstream areas of inquiry address certain human needs that the mainstream science could not. However, no matter how effectively could the nonmainstream areas of inquiry help people relieve the pressure, the potential harm caused by them far outweighs their psychological benefits, so that they could never be (play) a vital role in society. If people overmuch depend on these nonmainstream areas to solve their problems or even apply these methods into the normal science research, the result is out of imagining(imagination). (有同样的问题,感觉纯粹说理太单调了,可以举那时的人迷信,什么治病不相信科学什么的吧)

Falungong(好像是这么写的,不过老美好像比较忌讳这个例子,他们似乎不认为这是邪教), the heresy that prevailed in China several years ago, made its followers share a thought that as long as they believe in Falungong, they need no treatment when they are sick, and they can ascend to heaven after they burn themselves. Obviously, this is the extremity of the nonmainstream pursuits that bring about extraordinary harm to society stabilization and people’s life.

感觉文章有点单薄, 说理有点口语化,不过最后第二段不错。可以加一点例子,就从题目给出的三个方面举例就行了。 :lol

还有一段时间才考吧,现在这个水平不错了!:vomit:加油!!!;P;P
