153"Students should bring a certain skepticism to whatever they study. They should question what they are taught instead of accepting it passively."

It is well accepted that education should never be equal to doctrine. While doctrine just require students to accept what they are taught passively, education encourage the students to treat what they are taught with skepticism. Skepticism is necessary for every student who wants to be an effective learner and better function in the society.

To begin with, skepticism helps the students to better understand what they are taught, thus makes them effective learners. Passively accepting what they are taught could never bring about a true understanding of the knowledge. It is just a process of mechanically memorizing. Skepticism is quite a different way. It requires the students to examine the knowledge and find problems about what they are taught. Such kind of process is active. While examining the knowledge require the students to think independently about the knowledge, finding possible problems and solving them help the students to clarify their misunderstandings about the knowledge or even find the flaws about them. Skepticism could really make the students independent thinkers and better understand what they are taught.

Furthermore, skepticism helps the students to build the ability of critical thinking which is the basic ability to better function in the future society. Critical thinking requires the students to treat things with their minds and asking questions about them which is exactly the requirement of skepticism. Such kind of skill is a must for the students to better function in the society. In the scientific area, it is critical thinking that helps scientists to challenge the theories of their predecessors and finding the truth by themselves. In the social field, it is critical thinking that helps people to distinguish justice from injustice and making reforms to bring about a wholesome social system. Even in the area of art, critical thinking is a must to create one's own styles. In a word, skepticism equips us with the ability of critical thinking which not only helps us to survive in the society, but also live better.

Admittedly, over skepticism could lead to cynicism, and it is the duty of education to prevent students from going to such extremes. If the students are challenging everything they are taught including the laws and morality of the society, they could go to extremes. After all, if everybody raises a hand against the laws, the society could be in a chaos. Therefore, it is the duty of education to prevent the students from cynicism. The students should be taught to respect the knowledge which is passed down from one generation to another as well as the core values of the society.

In sum, skepticism is essential for students. It not only help the students to understand what they are taught better but also help them to build the ability of critical thinking which could make them better function in the society. But teachers should try to prevent their students from cynicism.
