------正文------
People sometimes complain that all politicians are liars, because in some cases the officers do not tell public the truth. While a person of frankness will sure be respected, I suppose that the politicians can hide something just in case that the purpose is to benefit the country and citizens. But the outcomes will be incorrect if some one extends this proposition too far.
To be a effective leader, one must win enough support from the public, which can guarantee his or her power and political place. Then he or she can execute the policy or strategy effectively to benefit the public. Honesty, as a requisite merit for a leader, would be an essential reason for people to be the followers. As is known to all, Gorge Washington is famous for the story of his frankness in his childhood, which makes him to be a respective leader in character. Abraham Lincoln, as another well-known example, also possessed this virtue and was considerate as the greatest president in American history. Their honesty helped to accumulate supports from the residents and make sure their policy can be followed well.
But in some cases, frankness does harm to both the political leader and the public. If the government officers tell all they know to the citizens, it may cause bad influence. Once a government is threatened by terrorists, it would prevent the information form leaking out, which would surely leads to a pandemic panic. Government should address the crisis secretly, alert people to avoid the danger for some other accuses, and inform the public the whole matter after the country become safer. It would be inappropriate for the leader to tell the public the truth too early which can offer the terrorists chances to break in. Under this circumstance, political leaders do not need frankness and their behaviors can also be called successful.
However, if the politicians always tell people they hide something just for the good of the country and the residents, and then do something selfish, or even something evil, it would demolish the whole society. If some one discovers some secrets of the government, which are not accepted by the public or even not allowed, it would generate a pandemonium. Moreover, once a president covers too much truth which should be known by the public, the government system would become opaque and it would generate power concentration. According to this probable result, a leader should not always conceal something.
To sum up, while honesty is surely a crucial virtue for a leader, in some cases the politicians can use their power to hide some truth in order to guarantee the constancy of society. But once if they abuse this power, they will cause demolishment to the whole country. |
