"Education will be truly effective only when it is specifically designed to meet the individual needs and interests of each student."

In our society, some people believe that a truly effective education should be devoted to meet students' interests and needs. Other people concern that what and effective education should do is to teach students with academic knowledge and job related curriculums and function in our society. Though it is important to meet the needs and interests of students to develop their potential abilities, I believe that education also should focus on well-rounded person including functional workers for our society.

Admittedly, in the competitive society, more and more focus is paid on the job-related curriculums. Some parents believed that only those job-related curriculums could give their children a good future. In Shanxi province of China, one president of a high school was faired because of low scores their students got in one national exam. Both students and teachers are under the stressful atmosphere of high scores, the enrollment to a famous university, and good job opportunities and cannot to breathe. What educators and parents ignore are the interests and needs of students.

Interesting is the best teacher to students. To instill knowledge is not the goal of education, the ultimate goal of education is to draw the ideas from students. Only to teach students with academics without considering their interests and needs will induce the low moral of students in learning. To culture well-rounded students, teachers should give them spaces to develop their own interests and needs. Lots of significant individuals in history got success because of their pursuing of interests. Darwin had strong interests in nature at his childhood. Through pursuing his interests, he proposed the theory of evolution which has changed our beliefs from subjective view to objective view of nature's evolution. With meeting the students' interests and needs, our students have the ability of creativity which is good to our society and themselves.

However, students’ interests should be lead by teachers’ guidance and it is impossible for teachers to meet every kind and every students interests. If any needs and interests are met by educators without any standards, our next generation will be spoiled. For example, some students asked teachers let them play Pc games in class because of their interests; their requirements cannot be met because they not only distract other students from lessons but also have no any help for their learning. On another point, the resources of school are limited in their instruments and faculties, so it is possible that not every student's interests and needs could be met. At the premise of not hurting the academic teaching, school should meet students’ appropriate interests.

In sum, what educators should do is not only to meet the needs and interests of students, but also they should meet the needs of our society. They are not conflicts to each other, and they can be improved by each other.
