Issue 127
"Facts are stubborn things. They cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions."
The speaker asserts that facts are stubborn things and they cannot be altered by our wishes, our inclinations, or the dictates of our passions. I strongly agree with this assertion. Furthermore, I believe that one must respect facts in every aspect of one’s life, otherwise one would be doomed to fail.
on the one hand, facts are stubborn things. One can not alter it by ones wish or inclinations. If one tries to do this, one will pay the price for what one has done. Ample examples exist in the history demonstrate that one is doomed to fail if one try to alter or disregard of facts no matter one is intended or not. For example, before law of conservation of energy came to our civilization, many people engaged to design a perpetual motion machine. But they all ultimately failed. Leonardo da Vinci, the scientific giant, after nearly twelve years search in this field, also inevitably failed and at last he had to give it up and admitted that there will never be a real perpetual motion machine in the world. There is another example. As we now know death is a part of life. But in ancient time, many people dreamed to find some medicine that can make them avoiding death. During these people, there was a man name YingZheng, the first emperor of China. He sent thousands of young men and women sailing out to sea to seek the medicine that can make him never die but his men and women never came back. More than two thousands years had passed, we can still not find a way to avoid death.
On the other hand, if one can respect the fact that facts will not be changed by ones wish, one would not try to alter it but follow it and one can make out useful thing of it. For example, we human beings have not wings as have birds, so we can not fly. It is of no use wasting time to think about how we should flutter our hands and feet as do birds then we can break loose the gravity and soar in the air. It is only when we accept the fact that we can not fly like a bird then can we focus our attention to make some tools such as fire balloon, plane, and even spaceship to help us fly. By doing this we human beings can now not only fly from one place to another like a bird, but also we can fly from the Earth to the Moon.
In the final analysis, facts are those things that had been done in the past or already exist now, what one must do is not to alter it but to respect it and act in a proper way following the facts. Otherwise, one will inevitably fail and pay for what one had done.
