Does society place enough emphasis on the reasoning and other cognitive skills? The speaker says no. That means we should pay more attention on students' intellect in the education. However, I would say that instead of too little, the society too focus on students' intellect. Society should provide a balance on intellect training and other trainings.

First of all, from elementary school, to high-school, and even to the college, the most courses are aiming at training students' intellect. In the compulsory courses, nearly all the lessons are maths, physics, logic, and things like these. Arts including music, literature analysis, painting etc. have never been the obligation for all students. Take myself for example, I spent almost all the day busing calculating maths and conducing the formula of physics when I was in high school. Even more school boards cancelled the lessons relating to art during our last high school year. Thus students access more opportunities to exercise their intellect. What is more, the major method to evaluate students' performance still lies on examination on the intellect. To get a satisfied score proving one's talent, he or she must spend myriad time on training reasoning and other cognitive skills.

Too much emphasis on the intellect may result in many problems on students. All students are bound to enter the society. What society needs are not  mechanical minds with high intellect but more vivid minds with imagination and plenty of emotions. So schools should pay some attention on students' ability to explore their emotion. Scientists and Psychologists tend to conclude this ability to emotion intelligence quotient (EQ), concerning with people's ability to understand his own emotion and other's emotion, and the actions based on the understanding. Because the great utility of EQ in people's achievement is newly recognized, few schools provide special courses oriented to the training about that. To cultivate balanced students, school should take the responsibility of EQ training.

EQ training will benefit students a lots. In modern society, as a popular saying goes: " People's success 20 percent lies on intelligence quotient (IQ), while 80 percent lies on emotion intelligence quotient. " This saying soundly indicates the importance of EQ in people's success. Actually, IQ and EQ are both important factors for one's success. IQ provides fundament and stepstones while EQ offer direction, motivation, courage and other spiritual needs for success.

To sum up, without intellect training students can not attain ample knowledge and skills. Without EQ training students may lose in the information ocean. Both are inevitable factors for success. So schools should provide balanced courses to ensure these trainings.

楼主问题好大呀，intellect的意思[英汉] 现代英汉综合大辞典　理解力; 思维能力; 理智, 智力...而且题目上也明确的说了 reasoning and other cognition skills, 这些都是智力层面上的东西，和高中教的具体的知识是不能混淆的呀．我觉得跑题了，语言上到没什么大问题．

不管了，要是真写这个的话，就按照大家的想法写吧，呵呵
