103 "The study of history has value only to the extent that it is relevant to our daily lives."
15:46 2005-8-19
I totally agree with the speaker's assertion. Besides, it is unnecessary for the author to use 'only' since in my opinion everything regarded as values is beneficial to one's personal development, which is actually involves one's daily life.
Mainly, people are inclined to judge whether something have value or not according to the ensuing benefits in two aspects--material and mental benefits. In fact, study of history suits both of two criteria, and therefore helps improve the personal development which is shown in one's daily life.
Firstly, through the study of science history, we learned the basic principles in scientific areas, which could be applied in new technology that leading to our comfortable life nowadays. Today, we could conveniently communicate with our friends or relatives through mobile phone or internet, greatly reducing time as before. The air-conditioning in summer provides us cool environment in house. Fast developed technology in pharmacy encourages us to be calm when facing diseases, which might cause great pressure to medieval people. Are these new technologies not relevant to our daily life? Without studying of science history, which includes the great scientists' intelligent contribution as basis for all technologies, we human beings may still live in the barbarism. In short, study of science history indirectly satisfied our desire in material aspects relevant to our daily life.
Furthermore, when concerning the mental aspects, on the one hand, study of heroes or heroines inspires us to be brave when facing adversity in our daily life. They also persuade us to comply with high moral standard in whatever situation. Copernicus's persistence in pursuing for truth despite pressure from religion authority instills us the character of insistence. Mother Teresa, who got the Nobel Prize for her dedication to helping the poorest in India, shows us the kind heart of mankind and tells us to help others in need. There are also many others' good characters of famous people in the history available. If integrating these characters, people would present them naturally in daily life and also are most likely to earn good reputation from others.
Studying of history also provides us opportunities to appreciate the great value of beautiful arts like paintings, perfect constructions, sound music, all of which satisfy our aesthetic needs and add to happiness in daily life. For instance, the world famous art gallery 卢孚宫 , the beautiful music from Mozart, the attractive and puzzling smile from great work Mona Lisa, all of these works in history make it possible for us to touch the essence of human world.
Above are only several examples that illustrate the benefits of studying of history while there are also many others that have not been shown. Whatever we are studying, including history, we are benefiting from absorbing others' experience to make personal development, shown in our daily life.
