The speaker asserts that according the appearance and behavior of people one can know much about their attitudes and the society's value. I tend to agree with this statement with reservations. In my view, the way people look, dress, and act reveals some of their attitudes and value system in some circumstances, however, in many other situations they do not. Moreover only by observing the appearance and behavior is not enough to understand a society.开头可以!
I turn the first to agree with the speaker that to some extent the appearance and behavior do reflect the attitudes and value system of a society. For example, in immigrated counties such as the United States and Canada, the ways people wear and behave are quite diverse. This is a accurate indicator of the character of these countries—they are tolerance about different races, believes, customs and ethics. To the contrary, some centralized countries such as the Islamic countries all women wear black robes and veils, and all people almost have the exactly same routine and behave--they attend ritual ceremonies, do not eat specific foods and so on so forth, this is an evident reflection that they worth unified religion. In such situation, the appearance and behavior do function as the indicator of the attitudes and value systems of the society.
Another apt example has to do with the way of which western people and eastern people treat money. In most western countries, people enjoy their money when they earn it, it is common to see a Italian take a trip to Mediterranean at a common weekend, while most oriental people such as Chinese more inclined to save the money for future—a typical Chinese tradition. The different ways people use their money mirror different economical value system between western world and eastern world.这两段合起来吧!
However, in many other situations, the way people look, dress act do not reflect their virtue attitudes and interests. Take the way people wear for example, on the one hand, coincident with the accelerating of globalization, more and more people in modern time wear the same type clothes no matter they live western or eastern countries. For instance, today it is very rare to see a Japanese woman wearing kimono to work; instead they wear the same types of suits as western society. On the other hand, people choose what to wear depend on the financial standard to a large extent and not their true interests, e.g. People in developing countries may wear less diverse and fashion than those in developed countries do not necessarily because they do not take appearance not seriously, but result from the restriction of economy. Similarly, people's activities also do not always reveal their real attitude and value. Considering the difference in developed nations and developing nations again. The times that people in developed countries go to gyms to do exercise surely beats those of people in developing countries, not necessarily because people in developing countries care less about their health, but rather due to the financial problems.觉得这里构思不太好,不是说经济上的差异导致穿着的不同,就算经济发达的国家之间,也不是都一样啊;既然要说全球化就把它说透点.
Finally, a society’s ideas and values have more meanings than the appearance and behavior could reflect. In other words, by observing the ways people look and act could not thoroughly understand them, we must resort to communications, arts, literature and so forth which help us look beyond the superficial phenomena to comprehend the thoughts and principles of a society.可以说要了解一个社会,还要从民族的传统文化,历史,教育,社会现象等方面说说.
In conclusion, I agree insofar as people’s appearance and behavior of a society do reveal its ideas and values to some degree, however in other situations they could not serve as the indicator well, therefore observing the ways people look and act is not enough to understand a society a lot.
