Does the arts just reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society as the speaker mentions? In my view, the speaker merely considers one respect of the arts' functions. In fact, due to the different states and backgrounds of the artists, the real values of the arts vary from case to case.

Admittedly, some certain arts indeed reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of a society. Living in different societies, the overall environments vary from each other that in the peaceful time the populace may lead a happy life, while in war time or tough time, the masses may suffer from the tribulation. The responsible artists, especially living in the hard time, could always reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of the society. When Spain was under the reign Nazi, the bombing in Spanish cities caused numerous deaths that populace dare not to express their hatred and sorrow because of the oppression of the invaders, but through the work of Pigoen and Guernica, Picasso help the masses reveal the hidden ideas. Similarly, Van Gogh's masterpiece, Potato Eaters, expresses misery and poverty of humanity as he saw among the miners. Therefore, through some arts of the responsible and sympathetic artists, the hidden ideas and impulses of a society could be revealed.

However, excluding the above situations, the arts could not always reveal the hidden ideas and impulses of societies. Sometimes, under the control of the authority, the arts created by the artists could not manifest the ideas or thoughts of the artists themselves and the majority populace, but just the will of the rulers'. Then it is hard to evaluate that the arts reveal the otherwise hidden ideas and impulses of the society. One of the best examples is the arts created in the Medieval Europe. The works of the artists were restrained by the authorities that they had no choice but to create the works about the Gods, otherwise they would be punished. On this sense, the arts could just reveal the ideas of the authorities not the societies.

Furthermore, in most occasions, the artists take advantage of the arts to express their own emotions that are not relevant with any ideas and impulses of the society. The creating of arts, is absolutely the manifestation of the talent of the artists, the outpouring of subjective emotion and the overflow of the instantaneous inspiration. Take an example of Beethoven. His famous opus Moonlight is merely an expression of his love towards a lady and the sorrow of the lost of affection. Similarly, Bach created the Well-Tempered Clavier Book in order to prove and explain the principles of well-tempered, a music theory. Van Gogh accomplished the famous work of Crows in the Wheatfields a few weeks before his suicide, in order to manifest his emotion of loneliness and self-doubt. Thus we can see that most masterpieces are not revealing the hidden ideas and impulses of the society but the emotion of the artists themselves.

To sum up, in different times and environment, artists may create different kinds of arts which may reveal the ideas and impulses of the society, while which may express the emotion of the artists, and which may also manifest the authorities' inclination.
