Issue

TOPIC:
ISSUE157 - "There is no such thing as purely objective observation. All observation is subjective; it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires."

WORDS: 462

TIME: 01:23:35

DATE: 2009-6-15 22:23:32

The speaker asserts that all observation is subjective, and it is always guided by the observer's expectations or desires. In other words, there is no such thing as purely objective observation. I totally disagree with this statement. Although the observer's expectations or desires may influence some observation results, not all observations do so.

First and foremost, we should distinguish objective form subjective. In philosophy, there is no clearly definiton of subjective and objective, however, a general accepted proposition is that to be objectively true when its truth conditions are "mind-independent" - that is not the result of any judgments made by a conscious entity. Then we can infer that, if there is an observation that independent to the observer, the observation is objective, and therefore the objective observation exists. Otherwise, there is no objective observation. Further analysis of the concept "mind-independent" tell us that
if there is an observation that all observers will give the same result, it is consequently an objective observation.

Then we come to the question: is there an observation that all observers will give the same result? Before answer the question, we could again notice the speaker's words with respect to observaton. The speaker pointed out that the expectations or desires always guided the observation and implicated that this guide will influence the observation result. However, in many cases, this kind of influence little. We could easily give some examples that show the same observation result from different observers despite their various expectation or disires. If we put no matter how many observers on the equater of the earth, they will observe that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, no matter what directions the observers expect or desire. Similarlly, if an A is longer than object B, then the observers, who use the same measure instrument and right mesure method, will observe the same result that the length of A is greater then that of B regardless of his expectations or desires. Therefore, we could conclude that there is some observations that is independent to observer's mind, that are the objective observations.

However, if the speaker constrain the observations into a smaller subcategory, I will agree with him/her.There is a kind of observation that relate to the judgement by observer. For example, if we organize a group of observers to observe whether a painting is beautiful, once the number of observers is enough large, there must be different observation results. Thus, because of the subjectivity of human mind, the observation concerning with the individual human judgement will be subjective.

To summarize this issue, we could conclude that there is objective observation which is independent to observer, while the observation will no longer be objective once it is related to individual human judgment.

In philosophy, there is no clearly definiton
definition of subjective and objective, however, a general accepted proposition is that to be objectively true when its truth conditions (?)
are "mind-independent" - that is not the result of any judgments made by a conscious entity(看不懂这句话). Then we can infer that, if there is an observation that independent to the observer, the observation is objective, and therefore the objective observation exists. Otherwise, there is no objective observation. Further analysis of the concept "mind-independent"( mind-independent concept) tell(tells) us that if there is an observation that all observers will give the same result, it is consequently an objective observation.

Then we come to the question: is there an observation that all observers will give the same result?(an observation that all observers will give the same result不等于purely objective observation吧,这个是上一段一步步退出来的,在推的过程中就要注意偏题的危险。) Before answer the question, we could again notice the speaker's words with respect to observaton
(!). The speaker pointed out that the expectations or desires always guided the observation and implicated that this guide will influence the observation result. However, in many cases, this kind of influence is little. We could easily give some examples that show the same observation result from different observers despite their various expectation or disires(!). If we put no matter how many observers on the equater(!) of the earth, they will observe that the sun rises in the east and sets in the west, no matter what directions the observers expect or desire. Similarlly(!), if an A is longer than object B, then the observers, who use the same measure instrument and right mesure(!) method, will observe the same result that the length of A is greater then that of B regardless of his expectations or desires. Therefore, we could conclude that there is(!) some observations that is independent to observer's mind, that are the objective observations.

However, if the speaker constrain
(!constrains the observations into a smaller subcategory, I will agree with him/her.There is a kind of observation that relate to the judgement(!) by observer. For example, if we organize a group of observers to observe whether a painting is beautiful, once the number of observers is enough large, there must be different observation results. Thus, because of the subjectivity of human mind, the observation concerning with the individual human judgement(!) will be subjective.

To summarize this issue, we could conclude that there is objective observation which is independent to observer, while the observation will no longer be objective once it is related to individual human judgment.
