------题目------
Scandals—whether in politics, academia, or other areas—can be useful. They focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could.
------正文------
I partially agree with the speaker assertion that scandals can focus our attention on problems in ways that no speaker or reformer ever could. Yet reformers and speakers still play a noticeable role in attracting people's attention.
To begin with, scandals should be divided into two categories, scandals related to private life and scandals related to public life. For the former, they may bring bad effects to the society, especially for children. For the latter, they ensure the equality of the society.
On one hand, people should not put their foci on scandals related to private life although many people show more interests in the private life of the famous few. It is human inborn nature that they always want to know the secret of the daily life of the famous few. Talking and spreading such scandals is meaningless, and can also have bad effects on children. For a striking example, we need to look no further than Clinton's loving affairs. People who are still gossiping it today are usually those people with little knowledge and have a lot of free time. Seldom can we find a political leader put their attention on this. Indeed, for a political leader, people should not focus on his/her private life, but if he/she can really balance the power of all parties, give a peaceful environment for the entire society and use different policies to improve people's life. Moreover, overemphasis on such scandals may make children to imitate them for they don’t have the ability to distinguish the right and wrong. Thus, too many foci on the scandals related to private life is not a good phenomenon for the entire society.
On the other hand, people should put their foci on scandals related to public life, as those scandals may bring danger to the society. Most of those scandals have broken the laws or rules in their own field and make the competition unfair. Watergate scandal resulted in the unequal competition of two candidates in the election. And it directly led to the immediate resignation of Nixon. People should pay attention to those scandals as they are more related to people's everyday life. The equality in any fields should be ensured to provide equality to the mass. Just imagine, if Nixon remained to be the president after the Watergate Scandals, many political leaders may think that laws wouldn't punish them and they could do anything freely. And the mass would be worried about that laws are biased. Under this circumstance, it is very difficult to ensure that a healthy environment to benefit the development of the society.
Reformers and speakers usually have played a more positive role in the process of advance, but they can never attract people's attention as scandals do. The public may ignore the sound of reformers and speakers. Yet it is them sometimes force the government to revise the laws and to ensure the interest of the mass. Unlike scandals, which usually focus only on one special problems each time and not happed so often, reformers and speakers can state their opinions and propose a systematic solution to different problems related to almost all aspects of the society. In addition, while scandals usually make a sharp change of people's ideas, reformers and speakers can use more mild way to carry on the reformation.
In sum, we should treat two kinds of scandals separately and put more foci on the scandals related to public life instead of those related to private life. With the help of both scandals and reformers and speakers, a peaceful, healthy environment can be created to let the advance of the society go smoothly.
