Some educational systems emphasize the development of students' capacity for reasoning and logical thinking, but students would benefit more from an education that also taught them to explore their own emotions.
What is the purpose of education? This question agitates scholars, schools, parents and all of the thoughtful men and women. The conventional answer is the acquisition of knowledge, the development of variety kinds of skills, as well as the formation of righteous common values. And an even more all-embracing answer is the statement that education is "to produce qualified citizens". From this point of view, the ability of reasoning and logical thinking, together with the capacity of exploring and mastering one's own emotions, is equally essential, because it could complement each other.
The function of reasoning and logical thinking is to be able to understand and analyse difficult situations, exhume theories behind simple facts, and to apply them into reality usages. In this way, one could become a helpful citizen, no matter whatever or how much he could do within his ability, to make contributions to the whole society. For instance, the child learning mathematics is learning invaluable lessons in citizenship. Arithmetic is an important pre-curriculum influencing child's later understanding of economics. As economical problems are increasingly drawing our attention, and due to its vital position in national progress, a citizen who could deal well with his own economical issues, or a professional who could carry out available solutions and policies is in desperate need. In order to handle these situations, an adequate awareness of logical and reasoning methods should be absorbed and formed through arithmetic courses.
And the meaning of concentrating on self-emotions is to build comprehensive personality and character. It is emotional relationships between individuals that connected the whole human community closely together. Therefore people who have learned to conduct the relationship with the rest of world can be called well-developed citizen, as well as cultivated quality demanded by the modern society. On one hand, some other school contacts--social activities and athletics--develop team spirit, leadership, and thoughts and considerations for others. These are all necessary in good emotional cultivations. On the other hand, a good educational system should definitely involved the participation of parents and other home surroundings. The example of those who dear to children and constantly with them is what makes the wrap and woof of their spiritual lives. And for knowing the complexity of the whole universe, for concerning the government and the society, for caring the movements of one's own mental and psychological activities, eductaion of exploring one's emotions shouldn't be ignored.
From this perspective, how shall we arrive at both objectives? My answer is grasping the art of combination and complement. The difference even contradiction between sensible and sensitive minds were clearly depicted hundreds of years ago in Jane Austin's famous novel. However, in spite of fearing its negative consequence, I perceive that reasoning mind and emotional thoughts could perfectly work with each other. There are many questions today between economy and environment, reservation and innovation, and other matter which is related to the global cooperation and competition. Mathematics and humanity are required to be intertwined, so that a effective and well-balanced solution could come out.
To be sure, in reality, few people could develop these two capacities into an equal level. Likewise, an artist who specialized in emotional affairs of course is a contributed citizen as well as a good result of education. So is a scientist. However, it is no doubt that any extremely reasoning or emotional citizens would be hardly accepted by groups of people. And those who could balance them better are supposed to be the best. |
