提纲1,客观的greatness应该由后人评价。科学,希特勒
2,主观的greatness 由同辈来更深入的了解,孔子
3,既主观又客观的两方面的了解都重要,梵高
To understand an individual's greatness, one should be objective and comprehensive. It seems only after a certain period of time can we be truly objective to one's life and comprehensively to evaluate it, since the time ensure us with the outcome of one's actions, attitudes and masterpieces. But can the people restrospecting one's life through history fully value his or her greatness, without a deep understanding? We may misunderstand or, at least, not a fully understanding of what motivated him or her towards the greatness.
As for some objective field such as social work and science, the afterwards outcome are commonly, if not always, vital to discover one's greatness. Priest Mendel, who is regarded as the father of genetics by his observation of traits of peas, did not shock the world until 20 years after his death. It seems that his theory was not an easy accepted one for people in his age though so fundamental that currently a high school students can agree with him. In this respect, his greatness of uncover the secret of genetic cannot be evaluated by his contemporaries but can finally decided by the modern people thanks to both the development of science and his greatness's object trait. Since the law of genetics should never change, we can understand his greatness without communicating with him, that is, without live with him. Moreover, it is quite the same when it comes to Adolf Hitler, who can hardly be regarded as a great person nowadays since we have a comprehensive understanding of his fierce. But the Germen in 1930s did think so. Civilians in Germany was motivated by Hitler's eloquence and believed in his project to bring Germany back to the superpower of the world. Actually, we hardly blame on those people, as they cannot get the understanding objectively and comprehensively at that moment.
When it comes to some subjective issues such as views, the longer time passed, the harder to decide. Confucius, accompany with his Confucianism affects the morale in China, Japan, Korea and other parts of the world. It is true that nowadays people evaluate his views while show great respect to him. But the fact that his students were those who understand his thinking most effectively. Through communication with the master, they develop their own understanding towards his views. Actually, the Confucianism is based on his students' book that recorded those talks between Confucius and the students. In this respective, we are learning from the understanding from his students. Apparently, no one could ever communicate with him and have a better understanding. That is, people live in the great men’s age can deeply evaluate the greatness of them from those subjective issues.
Furthermore, what if the greatness is combined with objective and subjective traits? An artwork, either painting or symphony, can absolutely be kept after the death of painters or composers. From this perspective, an artwork tend to be a objective one that can be evaluate by the people after artists. It is true when it comes to Vincent Van Gogh. It seems that his contemporaries, except his brother, can hardly understand the beauty of his painting, however, not the modern people. It is true that the beauty of art should never change from past to now and to the future. But can we better evaluate his Starry Nights after talking with him? Was he optimistic or not when painting it? Current people are debating the meaning while agree the value of the work. An art should be subjective, for the artist to express ideas. We cannot really imagine what was in his mind that motivate him creation. From this perspective, his contemporaries have the priority to decide the greatness of Van Gogh. Unfortunately, they did not. And the best way to evaluate it should be a combined one, both views from the past and now.
Whether a greatness to be decided by the contemporaries or descendants is due to the traits of it. That is, a subjective or objective one greatness is. A subjective greatness of an individual should be valued by the contemporaries while the objective ones by the people live after to have a more comprehensive view. Nonetheless, greatness like Van Gogh's works cannot be understood by people in his age, which is a pity, have to be decided by the current society. In sum, it is the character of greatness that decides whom to decide its greatness, and thus decide the individual. |
