The following appeared in a memo from the chief operating officer of the Presto Manufacturing Company "Since orders for our major product increased by over 200 percent last quarter, we should promptly expand production by building a new manufacturing plant in Summit City. Summit City is the ideal location for the new plant because it has low property taxes, extensive blocks of land available for immediate purchase, and a large number of residents who are not currently employed."
In the memo, the officer asserts that we should instantly expand production by building a new manufacturing plant in Summit City. To bolster his or her suggestion,
the officer cites that the orders for our major product increased by over 200 percent Last quarter and Summit City is a ideal location for the new plant. Although it seems reasonable at first glance, further scrutiny of each of the reason, however, it fails to support the officer's suggestion.
To begin with, the success of the orders for our major product last quarter cannot deduce that we should immediately build a new manufacturing plant in Summit City to expand production. First of all, the officer commit a fallacy that he or she considers what is true of the major product as what is true of the new plant. But as we know, the major product of a company is always put the most attention on, but we are informed little in this memo that the new plant is pay much more attention to its development. Secondly, whether the situation in last quarter will be go on the same in the future is not sure. But it is quite possible that the market demand will charge. So the suggestion of the officer seems unconvincing as it stands.
Furthermore, the officer cites that Summit City is an ideal place for the new plant because of the lower property tax, amount of available land as well as a number of labor force. Obviously, the officer ignored other critical factors to the new plant. For instance, the climate there may quite improper to cultivate the new plant, or the environment there may be polluted which are bad for the mew plant to grow. When it comes to the lower property tax, we are not told how much it took before, perhaps it is very low before, and this has a little influence in the whole profits. In terms of the labor force, although there are a large number of residents who are not currently employed, the reasons why they are not employed are not supplied. Perhaps it is just because of the high wages they required, or they are rich enough to live a good life without doing a job.
.
In short, the officer fails to provide a convincing suggestion. To strength his or her suggestion, the officer should supply us more information about the new plant, the major product and Summit City.
