45.The following appeared as an editorial in a wildlife journal.

"Arctic deer live on islands in Canada's arctic region. They search for food by moving over ice from island to island during the course of a year. Their habitat is limited to areas warm enough to sustain the plants on which they feed, and cold enough, at least some of the year, for the ice to cover the sea separating the islands, allowing the deer to travel over it. Unfortunately, according to reports from local hunters, the deer populations are declining. Since these reports coincide with recent global warming trends that have caused the sea ice to melt, we can conclude that the decline in arctic deer populations is the result of deer being unable to follow their age-old migration patterns across the frozen sea."

This editorial argues that a recent reduction in the numbers of Arctic deer that lives on islands in Canada's arctic region, as was originated from local hunters. Based on this evidence the author concludes that the reason resulted in the reduction of Arctic deer is change of environment, which make Arctic deer can not across through icy surface for looking for food according their original way. Also, the argument points out that global warming are more increasingly evident when the phenomenon occurred. The editorial suffers from several problems, which render it unconvincing as it stands.

First of all, in recent years, Arctic deer is generally decreasing in Canada's arctic region, which is derived from local hunters. Perhaps, over hunting, which leads to reduction of Arctic deer, which might be the main reason, however, is not referred in this editorial. Additionally, the editorial refers only the result of reduction, while the number of reduction and reduction rate is unclear, which is unscientific at some extent. If the reduction is not very high, it may be normal in the evolution.

Secondly, this editorial also overlooks a very important data that is increased centigrade, which can indicate that whether the icy surface could melt or not, whether Arctic deer could search for food by virtue of
moving
over ice or not. Perhaps, although the temperature has decreased because of global warming, the icy surface did not melt so much. Arctic deer can arrive in such kind of surroundings.

Even if the temperature is increasing in Arctic region, the editorial can not infer that Arctic deer will died because they can not adapt new surroundings. It is obvious fact that there is a explanation for this. When the temperature increases, the cold season will be shorter and the warm season will be longer. In that case, Arctic deer could live in warm season for longer and they will not be died of lacking food. On the country, Arctic can storage some food for relatively short cold season instead of moving over ice from island to island.

In conclusion, the editorial fails to convince me that there are some relationship between the reduction of Arctic deer and global warming. To strengthen the argument the author must account for all other factors that might influence the reduction of Arctic deer in Canada's arctic region. To better analyze the reason of reduction of Arctic deer, we would need more statistic data about the reduction rate and number, decreased centigrade.
