TOPIC: ARGUMENT51 - The following appeared in a medical newsletter.

"Doctors have long suspected that secondary infections may keep some patients from healing quickly after severe muscle strain. This hypothesis has now been proved by preliminary results of a study of two groups of patients. The first group of patients, all being treated for muscle injuries by Dr. Newland, a doctor who specializes in sports medicine, took antibiotics regularly throughout their treatment. Their recuperation time was, on average, 40 percent quicker than typically expected. Patients in the second group, all being treated by Dr. Alton, a general physician, were given sugar pills, although the patients believed they were taking antibiotics. Their average recuperation time was not significantly reduced. Therefore, all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment."

In this argument ,the arguer suggests that all patients who are diagnosed with muscle strain would be well advised to take antibiotics as part of their treatment .The conclusion is based on the results of a study of two groups of patients .However ,being carefully analyzed ,the study is not sound and reasonable enough to support the conclusion .

The major problem with the argument is that the arguer only points out the influence of antibiotics during the treatment and there may be other factors enabled the first group of patients to recover more quickly on average .The patients being studied may be in different physical conditions .For instance ,the first group may be made up of young patients who recovers quickly or the patients like athletes whose physical conditions is better than normal people .In addition ,the arguer failed to consider the types of their muscle strain .Different types of muscle strain takes different recuperation time and perhaps the muscle strain the first group suffered are mainly light injuries .

Another problem that undermines the argument is that the arguer ignores the treatment except antibiotics from the different doctors which may make a significant difference .It is mentioned in the argument that the first group of patients are treated by Dr.Newland ,a doctor who specializes in sports medicine and the second group by Dr.Alton ,a general physician .As an expert ,Dr.Newland may give his patients some effective treatment and advise them not to do certain things which may delay their recovery ,while Dr.Alton may just use some regular method .

Last but not least ,patients may take different activities throughout their treatment .Maybe some are still working ,studying and the others stay at home or in the hospital for whole days resting .Patients’ living condition may also have effects on recovery .

To sum up ,the conclusion is not reliable with so many unknown factors may influence the study .The argument could be improved by providing more information about the study that may weaken the argument or having another study with more convincing results .

This is the knowledge that/which we do not know.    which代指knowledge,充当know 的宾语,所以可以直接说“This is the knowledge we do not know."
He is the man who help us catch the robber.  who 代指the man,充当catch the robber的主语,不能省略。

可能不完整,参考一下。

The major problem with the argument is that the arguer only points out the influence of antibiotics during the treatment and there may be other factors enabled the first group of patients to recover more quickly. The patients being studied(挺别扭的,用involved会不会好些) may be in different physical conditions .For instance ,the first group may be made up of young patients who recovers quickly or the patients like athletes whose physical conditions is better than normal people .In addition ,the arguer failed to consider the types(这个词用的不是很恰当,你是想说受伤的严重程度吧) of their muscle strain .Different types of muscle strain takes different recuperation time and perhaps the muscle strain the first group suffered are mainly light injuries .

Another problem that undermines the argument is that the arguer ignores the treatment except antibiotics(没有表达清楚)from the different doctors which may make a significant difference .It is mentioned in the argument that the first group of patients are treated by Dr.Newland ,a doctor who specializes in sports medicine and the second group by Dr.Alton ,a general physician .As an expert ,Dr.Newland may give his patients some effective treatment and advise them not to do certain things which may delay their recovery ,while Dr.Alton may just use some regular method .

To sum up ,the conclusion is not reliable with so many unknown factors which may influence the study .The argument could be improved by providing more information about the study that may weaken the argument or having another study with more convincing results .

句子基本没有什么问题,不过段落逻辑感觉没有处理好,有没有发现三个正文段都只在说一个问题,就是除了antibiotics外的其他因素,有没有注意到文中从一小部分推所有的错误呢?
