It’s an irresistible trend that many of the world's lesser-known languages are being lost as fewer and fewer people speak them. From Alaska to Australia, according to a new study, hundreds of languages around the world are teetering on the brink of extinction—some (+of them are) being spoken only by(by only比较好吧) a single person(只有一个人讲这种语言?). What’s worse, there is no evidence showing cease or declination of this trend(这句感觉有点问题 there is no evidence show the cease or dedination of this trend 或者 no evidence showing ... trend can be cited. ). Linguistics expert(s) warn that nearly all of the languages, up to almost 6000 kinds, could be extinct in the next two centuries. Affected by globalization and preparing for international competition, it’s reasonable and necessary for the young generations to abandon their indigenous languages and turn to main languages. Thus, a decrease in the population among the speakers of these languages is predicable.
The extinction means a lot not only to the local speakers but others(mean在这里是想表达'意味着很多'的意思么?感觉有点中国化,直接写出有negative effects多好呀). To the speakers of these languages, one of the most significant attributes of their unique ethics evaporates with the extinction. The most important label which distinguishing themselves with others fades away. As well as their unique knowledge, including philosophy, empirical experiences, special customs, and understanding of the nature and so on, embodied by this language, will encode after the extinction of their languages. To others who seem unrelated with this extinction, one thing should keep in mind is that:
every time we lose a language, we lose that much also (??also放句末好一点吧?)of our adaptability and our diversity that gives us our strength and our ability to survive. From an ethical standpoint, all languages are of equal value. But the value of a language goes far beyond academic discourse. It contains the intellectual wisdom of populations of people and their observations of and adaptations to the world around them. Generation by generation, these elites tested by time and practices and finally accumulated in their ethnic’s treasury(这个指国库,我觉得作者要表达的是文化宝藏之类的意思吧). Language is the very key to open the door of that treasury. There is no difference between finding our losing keys and preventing the extinction of lesser-known languages.
However, priorities should be given at first before preventing the extinction. Not all of the lesser-know languages are of equal value. Just like we classify our keys in pockets according to the importance of the property locked in the door which it can open, relevant research should be done to evaluate the “mineral deposit” hidden behind specific languages.(能想到用比喻,很不错~)
As mentioned before that lesser-known languages both important for their speakers and others(is important for both their speakers and others). Especially, the communication and collision of different cultures based on various languages gestate great innovations. Historical events proved many times that these kinds of culture hybrid(杂交植物... diversity可以表示文化多样性) not only affect the language speaker but the whole society. Such as Buddhism, characterized by ancient Indic language, influence Chinese greatly. So the government, not individuals、NGOs or other organization, should take the responsibility of preventing such languages from being extinct.
In conclusion, extinctions of languages are the natural consequences of social development. Although obviously disadvantages of it can be seen, the government should not try to revive those endangered languages. Just like plants, languages also have their own well adapted climate. More evidences need to be collected to answer whether this lesser-known language can revive again. What should be done now is just preventing such languages from being extinct. Thus, as mentioned in the argument, keep the “keys”.
