It is incontestable that with the rapid development, technologies have greatly changed our economic structure and production activities, and then generated tremendous influence on our social customs and ethics. However, the influence of technologies on social life should not be overestimated as a determinant despite its strong impact--a society is much more than a technology-driven community and we shall develop an overall aspect of the influence of technologies.

Technologies do make our social custom and ethics different from that in the past, with the advent of steam engine, airplane, satellite, gene engineering and especially, the Internet. It is reported that new features of social communication custom of teenagers are being developed in virtual communities through the Internet. Their social network system is primarily established on the web, which may provide them some kinds of new legal roles nonexistent in both school and family in real world. Sociologists believe that this new concept based on web communication will continue its influence on social customs. The advent of the era of knowledge economy update the content of ethics either: People now evaluate education as one of the most important part for further development, show more respect to knowledge and talent, and belittle the illiterate by choice more than ever before.

It looks like that it is the technologies that guide, or to some extent, determine, the social customs and the ethics as the science moves forward. However, it's a plausible conclusion. It is obvious that our social life is the complex combination of multiple elements more than natural science and the material world, and technical element is just one part of that. For example, tchnologies have little influence on the customs related to religions. As to the ethics, according to the widely-accepted definition, it is the norms for conduct that distinguish acceptable and unacceptable behavior and the framework based on certain common conception of value and common sense that was formed and established in history. These can be found in The Golden Rules or religious code from the ancient wisdom, which remain as the basis of ethics today and have not been changed by the improvement of technologies. Besides, technologies can't tell right and wrong themselves without rational guidance of human, then how to determine such a framework that requires a judgment? Furthermore, there seems to be no solid reason to exclude the behavior of technological research and experiment from the restriction of moral norms. Thus, to some extent it is the ethics that determines the development of technologies. And that's the reason why people develop the science called "Sci-Tech Ethics".

To sum up, technologies have great influence on our modern society indeed. But the influence does not deserve any fanatic belief that it can determine social customs and ethics because of the complexity of society. Instead, we shall keep the development of technology in certain restriction of ethics to avoid its negative effect as a double-sided sword.
