TOPIC: ISSUE121 - "At various times in the geological past, many species have become extinct as a result of natural, rather than human, processes. Thus, there is no justification for society to make extraordinary efforts, especially at a great cost in money and jobs, to save endangered species."

Dinosaur became extinct long before the first human came into being, many other species died out without interference of human beings. It seems that the extinction of the creations is foreign with us and hence there is no need for us to regret for it and save the endangered ones. Admittedly, we are not responsible for the extinct of all species. However, we do become the major cause of their disappearance. It is not only our guilty stimulates us to save these species, but also the demand for existence and continuous developing requires us to do it.

There is no denying that many species became extinct out of our responsibility. The nature is full of competition; the species which cannot adapt to the nature would be wiped out this world in the end, no matter what species they are. Panda, a kind of well known animal all over the world, has been existed on this planet for more than two hundred million years. According to scientist, there were plenty of species two hundred million years ago and most of them extinct before human is born. Obviously, their extinction is not of our responsibility. Even today, not all the extinct of species are due to our activities.

However, it has been widely accept that we are the main cause of their extinct. Many of species would exist much longer without the turbulence of human. Wild buffs, spread over North America three hundred years ago, can be found only in our books and pictures anymore. Why they died out so dramatically? Starvation, flood, or other natural disasters? None! It was just the exhaustive hunting of our ancestors made them leave this beautiful planet. As the advancement of science and technology, we can reach almost all places of the earth nowadays. We can explore the highest mountains, dive into the deep sea, and experience the life among rain forest. In a word, we can nearly do what can do. Sometimes we are proud of our power. Yet, everything has two sides. While our powerful ability brings us confidence and convenience, there are many negative effects accompany with it, one of which is the extinct of species. The science becomes more and more advanced, trace of human and machines spread over each corner of the earth. It is amazing for human to watch many high tech products created, bring us more exaggerate life. While in the other side, air is polluted, water is polluted, primitive forests are cutting down, human population is expanding, and the global warming problem.....All these contribute to the extinct of species.

It's time for us to take strong measures to save our friends-various kinds of species now. Not mention our guilty for putting them in a dangerous position, our requirement for continuous development forces us to do so. These species are dispensable to the nature; they do contribute to the stable of the biosphere. As we know, all species are naturally linked. The die out of a kind of insect may cause the extinct of other animals faraway. If more and more species are dieing out, the stability of the nature will be violated. The consequence is that we have to suffer various disasters for our behaviors.

In sum, it is unwise to stop the salvation of those endangered species. It's our responsibility and the demand of survival that requires us to rescue them.

TOPIC: ARGUMENT37 - Woven baskets characterized by a particular distinctive pattern have previously been found only in the immediate vicinity of the prehistoric village of Palea and therefore were believed to have been unique to the Palean people. Recently, however, archaeologists discovered such a "Palean" basket in Lithos, an ancient village across the Brim River from Palea. The Brim River is very deep and broad, and so the ancient Paleans could only have crossed it by boat, but there is no evidence that the Paleans had boats. And boats capable of carrying groups of people and cargo were not developed until thousands of years after the Palean people disappeared. Moreover, Paleans would have had no need to cross the river-the woods around Palea are full of nuts, berries, and small game. It follows that the so-called Palean baskets were not unique to Palea.

The arguer concluded that the so-called Palean baskets were not unique to Palea. To support it, the arguer cited the fact that a Palean basket was discovered in another ancient village, which would be hard for the ancient Palea people to reach since it is across from a wide and broad river from Palea. What's more, the arguer gave a hypothesis that ancient Palean people had no need to across the river. It seems reasonable. However, some serious flaws can be found by careful analysis.

First, we cannot make sure that the Palean basket found in Lithos was created by ancient Lithos people. There are several suspects. For the first one, it is probable that the basket was made by Palean people, while someone brought it to Lithos. Admittedly, the river between these two villages was too hard for Palean people to get across it. However, one one can be certain that Palean people had never visit Lithos during their long history. Even without large boats, other means could be invalid in some situations, such as small boats, or even a large log would be useful. For the second one, even the Palean people did never reach Lithos, yet the there is still the possibility that the basket was made in Palean and be took to Lithos after the disappearance of Palean culture. Maybe someone found the basket in Palean and took it to Lithos. If the basket was orinagined from Lithos, there should be more such baskets, however; so far we have only found one. In a word, it is too hard to assert that the basket was not taken from Palen.

Second, it is not sufficed to determine that Palean people didn't want to get across the river. Maybe the village is full of various kinds of food and they didn't need to go to other place to seek food. However, the arguer made a wrong hypothesis that human's motives to migrant are to seek materials. There is no doubt that people tend to stay in the same place if their living conditions are good. However, he/she ignores the fact that human beings are full of curiosity. They want know more about the outside world, especially when don't need to worry about food. The arguer didn't take other motives of ancient Palean people to across the river into consideration, as a result, the conclusion is not convincing.

Third, even the basket was made by Lithos people; however, perhaps the techno was originated from Palean. Maybe the technology was record on a book or on stone or other mediums and was found by Lithos people. If the arguer can't exclude this case, his/her conclusion is still not convincing.

In sum, the article is logically flaw and hence the arguer's conclusion is not substantial. To rectify it, the arguer should make clear that the basket was really made by Lithos people independently.
