The appearance and behavior can reflect the attitudes and interests of people to some extent, and a prevailing one can even show some about a society's idea and values. However those observations are only ostensible, if we want to reveal attitudes and interests or a society’s values and ideas, the way of specific scientific research is indispensable.

In a sense, the way people look, dress, and act reflects their attitudes and interests and even reflects a society's ideas and values. We may think that a man who wears western style suit is a gentleman at high level of the society going for their goals of careers and maybe a little bit serious. It is common sense that tells us what kinds of the man is through his appearance. Similarly, Japanese is known for their gesture of bowing frequently. Through that prevailing behavior we may regard that Japanese pay much attention to the etiquette. Thus, we may find some characters of people or a society by observing the appearance and behavior.

However, those characters are something ostensible, which means it can not reveal the real connotation hiding behind the phenomenon. Also pick up that man who wears western style suit as an example. Probably his working circumstance is deserved us attention. To pay a good impression on his boss, show the respect to their customers or even comply with the rules of the business, probably he has to choose the western style clothes. He maybe not has a possession of a great goal and only is a small potato of the company. And if there is no such rule, he perhaps prefers the clothes which are comfortable and a little bit odd that can show his individuality and personality. Similarly, although Japanese bow frequently, we may not be misled by such etiquette, which is the way to be isolated from others and the relatively so called exclusiveness. Some of my friends tell me that it is difficult to be real friends with Japanese, though you are called friends by them, you may be not shared feelings or information just because you are foreigners. The exclusiveness even results in the idea that though they Japanese would like to have a tour around the world, they are not willing that foreigners have a travel in Japan. Thus we may not be misguided by the ostensible presentation, which need us to trace the resource of the phenomenon.

The attitudes and interests of people and the society's ideas and values are not so easily to be revealed by observing the appearance and behavior. Only through systemic and comprehensive research can we know something about them. It is through communication and some other activities that we can have a better know about that man. Accordingly, whether he is a gentleman, whether he has a great goal, and whether he is serious can be determined through the deeper understanding. Without scientific research, we may be trapped just like that regarding colorful mushrooms are the most delicious ones, while those ones are even poisonous. And it is through researching a society's culture, history backgrounds and arts that we can find the real reason why such phenomenon happens. Through specific research, we know the exclusiveness comes from the economic stagnation for 10 years and the economic level falling behind in virtue of the economic globalization which makes Japanese lose their confidence. Thus, the deeper research is central and crucial for revealing underlying characters.

To sum up, the deeper research can break the illusion that the appearance and behavior reveals peoples' attitudes and interests and society's ideas and values. Admittedly, those can reflect some characters to some extend. However those are only stay on the surface.
