As for a period of so much new and complex problems, some people may doubt whether looking back for an understanding of the past could provide some guidance for living in the present. In my view, in some particular fields, it is true that we could find little help from looking back the past. However, we can find some relevant rules which could do benefits not only in a microscopic perspective for individuals but also in a macroscopic way for our human beings.
Admittedly, our precursors could not have imagined that our human society would have so much resplendent flourish. Although they had met complex problems of their time and some of them had a possession of long term views, they could not offer some specific solutions for current problems due to the rapid technology development they have never thought before. Obviously when we look back to the past, we could not find ways or even specific data about what is global warming, the effect of it and how to solve it effectively. Similarly, we could not find the solutions toward human cloning which brings out the argument concerning science and morality. We also could not find any experience to deal with the problems that computer virus arouses. Those problems make us confused and probably with more fields' consideration and deep exploration can people conquer them. Thus, looking back of the past seems little guidance for living in the present. However, is it really of little use to retrospect?
The answer is definitely no. It is a necessity to retrospect because we can get power from the precursors and learn more about our human nature for a better development. For one thing, many of us could find our idols or even some excellent qualities that one history person had. Those spark personality and qualities may help us find the deficient of ourselves and improve ourselves unceasingly. As for me, through the study of some relevant history, the diligence of Beethoven, the rigorousness of James Maxwell, the erudition of Aristotle, the skepticism of Galileo and even the creativity, wisdom of Einstein inspire me a lot. Although my dream is not to become a scientist or artist, in my point of view, to be a successful people, those characteristics are central and crucial. Whenever I think of some of them, I have motivation for striving. Thus looking back of the past can inspire a person for self-improvement.
For another thing, in a macroscopic perspective, through looking back we can know more about the nature of our human beings to explore the world deeply. On the one hand, no matter how rapidly the arms development, they are only the tools for people to win wars, which reveal the natures of greedy and lust which belongs to the deadly seven sins. Experienced the serious World War Two, German confessed their faults and do penitence every year at the anniversary. It is their right attitude towards this disaster that prevents them from repeating similar fault. At the same time, the whole world realizes such natures and learns a lesson that some peaceful negotiations should be adopted instead of wars. On the other hand, we human beings' pursuit for the truth, the good and the beautiful is everlasting. With the pursuit of these rules, the science and technology could develop rapidly and the artistic world could be so resplendent. The Maxwell's equations built by James Clerk Maxwell shows us the persistent exploration of the world and the truth. The works of Dali, one of the famous painters, shows his unique and even a little bit odd view of paintings and art. Thus through the study of the past, we could find some relevant natures and rules to be inspired for a better exploring toward the world and stand on the giants’ shoulders to make a contribution to the whole society.
To sum up, although for some specific issues, we could not find inspiration from the past, through looking back of the past we could get power of our precursors and meanwhile we may have a better understanding of our nature and relevant rules to inspire us for a deep exploration. |
