TOPIC: ISSUE70 - "In any profession-business, politics, education, government-those in power should step down after five years. The surest path to success for any enterprise is revitalization through new leadership."

In most modern society, the authority in any profession, no matter what realm involved, are no longer in power forever. The system that a leader is in his position lifelong has been proved unsuccessful by history. Instead, most enterprises revitalize through new leadership. Just as the speaker asserts, a proper term of leadership ensure the success for any enterprise.

Deficiencies of the too long term of leadership are obvious. To begin with, long term of leadership will increase the possibility of power abusing. It is unfortunate but true, that no one is created flawless and perfect in this world. No matter how virtuous and wise a man is, it is very difficult to resist the temptation of fame and wealth. Maybe a cool-minded and strong-willed leader has more immunity against the diverse lures in such a material society. However, history tells us that it is surreal to rest the hope of the whole enterprise on the self-control of the leaders without giving them proper restrictions. The feudal emperors in ancient China enjoyed their infinite powers all their lives. Although most of them enjoyed the highest level of education at their times, which is believed to be positive to cultivate good personalities, an extremely large proportion of them finally turned out to be fatuous and self-indulgent rulers. In general sense, more long-term leaders are engaged in the scandals of power abusing. Too longer term of leadership grant leaders sufficient time and power to abuse his authority for their own benefits. Moreover, the long term of leadership will make the system rigid. For example, the long-term leadership of Kim Jong Il in North Korea make the country’s policy stubborn for decades. The conflicting ideologies and the policy emphasizes the military first strongly limit the economy development of North Korea.

The introduce of periodic change in leadership will largely solve these problems. The periodic leading change will be beneficial to supervising authority and prevent the possible autocracy. The proper term of leadership in the USA contributes a lot to the disappearance of autocracy while the lifelong leaders like Franco in Spain and Mao Zedong in China result in the autocracy in fact. Moreover, through the leadership change, the enterprise is able to replenish itself with fresh blood and new leading ideologies. When the Den Xiaoping came into power after Mao Zedong passed away, the Open and Reform policy is adopted in China, which is unimaginable in the time of Mao. Then China has enjoyed high speed of economy growth for over 30 years and the living condition and ideologies of Chinese people are developing with the pace of modernization. The new leaders will bring new ways of leading and managing and make the enterprise more likely to keep in touch with the changing times.

However, too short term leadership will also lay negative impacts on enterprises as well as the long term ones. Short term leadership will sometimes result in the unnecessary instability. The too frequent change of leaders will leads to the frequent change in measures and policies, which is harmful to the development of enterprises. It also restricts the application of the policy which takes time to come effective. Hence, maybe the period of time around five years is proper and the necessary continuance in office should be allowed. The Roosevelt’s continuance in office for the New deal and WW2 is a vivid example of this.


In conclusion, the periodic change of leadership should be approved and adopted in proper way. Both too long and too short term of leadership will be harmful. We will no longer accept a lifelong leader but we can’t pay the high price for the frequent changing in the leadership.
