The listening and passage discuss the effects of the decline in literary reading. The lecture forms a stark contrast with the reading material, contradicting all of its three points.

First of all, the reading material claims that people's ability to think will decline. However, this opinion is contradicted by the following lecture, which points out although people today read fewer literary works, it does not mean that people do not read fictions. People can read other norms of books to increase their ability to think, such as science fiction.

Having contradicted the first point of the reading passage, the lecture goes on to attack it second one. The reading claims that the cultural level will decline. However the lecturer holds the opposite opinion. He believes that the cultural of the nation is more diversified than before, because the increasing ways of entertainment, such as television and radio.

Finally, the reading states that English literature becomes marginal because it lacks readers. According to the lecture, this is not the case at all. The lecturer argues that the people who should be responsible for the marginalization of English literature are the authors, rather than readers, because the reason why fewer people read English literature is that they are hard to understand.
