In the lecture, the professor believes that the three theories proposed to explain how birds navigate over thousands of miles to reach home have limits.

First of all, evidences show that birds are not all depending on the sun and the star compasses. Because for those birds that fly at night, it is hard to say they navigate by the sun. Moreover, there is only one species that uses the star compasses until now. It is difficult to conclude that all the birds do in the same way.

Second, in the reading the second theory says that the birds navigate by observing various landmarks when flying at lower elevations. The professor argues, however, that birds can navigate in this way only if they have made the journey before. The theory cannot explain that why birds can fly back home when they fly to a totally strange environment for the first time.

Finally, as to the third theory mention in the reading, it indicates that birds orientate themselves using a magnetic compass in their beak. The professor again does not agree with it. Because he believe the magnetic compass in the birds beak only can let birds recognize the north and south. Only depending on these two orientations it is difficult for location.

Therefore, the professor believes that the three theories have limits.

                     APPROPRIATE HOMEWORK IS BETTER
We often hear that many students, especially primary ones, complain that “Oh my God, I can’t finish my homework; there are too much to do!” Also, the sight of heavy school bags carried by students’ is normal. How such phenomena happen? It occurs just because some teachers assign homework every day, even a large amount of homework for students to finish. I cannot agree with this activity very much. Although to assign schoolwork is necessary, too much work which exceeds the bear ability of students is not acceptable.
   Why I do not support that teachers assign homework every day? First of all, it may occupy the necessary time for students to play. There is an old saying: ”All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy”, which means it is essential for a child to play because it is an critical part of a child’s development. Every day’s schoolwork leaves little time for students to watch movies, listen to music and play with friends. We know that life is more than study. What is more, the efficiency of doing homework at home may be lower when there is too much work to do. Reasons are obvious. Because after students have done some work efficiently at first, they may feel a little tired. And if they go on studying just to finish the assignment, the efficiency may decrease sharply. Maybe some students will do their work while they watch TV, for they do not want to do it anymore and just want to relax for a while. What a terrible result which teachers do not want to see.
    We can figure out that too much homework will turn out to be a big burden to students instead of an effective way to studying. What should sensible teachers do? They had better assign appropriate to their students. If possible, they even can let students do some practice in class. I remember very well one of my senior middle school teachers, who taught us biology at that time, just left us 20 minutes at the end of each class to do some practice and assign no homework at all. We students all appreciated that teacher very much and we did the work very seriously and efficiently. Accordingly, we all got high marks in the final exam.
    Therefore, I do believe that to assign homework properly is better to assign it every day. It both does good to students’ growth and increases the efficiency of studying.
