9.26 It is better to broad knowledge of many academic subjects than specialize on one specific subject.
The discussion of which type of employee is the better between generalist and specialist has been talked over again and again. In my point of view, I think a generalist will fit the modern society better.
To begin with, we all know that the relations among different fields of science are closer and closer nowadays. That is to say, the knowledge of one particular subject might be useful to help us solve problems in another field which is totally different from this one. For instance, we used to apply digital password to identify one person's identity and this is just a fundamental question in Information Technology. But we know that simple technology is not secure and dependable enough to meet the needs in many occasions so that a new technology, biological pattern recognition emerges. This new technology combines the original digital password with the biological characteristics such as fingerprint to identify a person and that is really an advancement.
Moreover, modern society advances on such a rapid pace that we could adjust to it easier if we have broad knowledge. The reason is that it is difficult for us individuals to figure out what kind of talent the society needs due to its changeable situation. One phenomenon often occurs that during one period when several particular technique is popular, a saturation of human resource in those fields will emerge, resulting in decreased value of those talents. However, if we handle a large range of knowledge we also have more choices about vocation and could change our career easier according to the situation.
To sum up, a generalist is more suitable to today's society than a specialist in my eyes because the world is developing so fast that broad knowledge could help us avoid falling behind.
