"It is often necessary, even desirable, for political leaders to withhold information from the public." 政治领导们在公众面前有所保留是必要的,甚至是必须的。
Whether political leaders should withhold information from the public depend on whether they are still on behalf of the benefits of the public, without weakening or damaging democracy, fairness which an energetic government advocates. Ruling out these basic principles, I can't agree more with the speaker on this issue.
As for personal lives and other privacy, political leaders have the same right as the normal people to keep them away from the public. It is incapable and unnecessary to ask a political leader to be as perfect as a moral leader, even a saint. The reason why we elect them to stay under the spotlight of the public is not because of their special talent or skills admired by others, but because they can better represent of our wills and serve for the masses. To those who can work efficiently, as well as propel the development of
material or spiritual civilization though break out established rules, we will support them; To those who sophisticate in politics but treat people as fools through sacrificing the majority's interests or challenging our democracy , fairness ,freedom and the like, we people will defeat them. We should keep the belief in mind that no matter what careers we are in, we are as equal and respective as every working people, because we both construct the history of human civilization, at the meantime, benefit each other.
Although paparazzi try to have a piece of personal affairs in respect to these people in special positions, we actually cannot compare them with some pop stars who commercialized themselves to win attentions, like lady gaga.
Besides, the nature working in the realm of politic requires these political leaders keep some information from the public. First, to be absolute honesty is a kind of naivety. For example, if Churchill announced military missions previously and publicly, the miserable atmosphere of World War II might last longer and bring more suffers to the British people. When it comes to political election, honesty might not be appreciated by the opponents who might try hard to find vulnerability and uncover every weakness to defeat the rest. For that, rhetoric is widely used to indirectly present politic viewpoints, especially when the issues are too complex and sensitive. On the other hand, some issues should not be let out, when problems that can be solved instantly but might result in public panic occur. Consider, suicides that result in losing hope deprived by panic during the Great Depression. Similarly, the government could not tell the passengers' relatives there is a
bomb detected during the flight before dealing with it--otherwise,
mass would occur but helpless to solve the danger.
However, it does not mean honesty is unnecessary for political leaders. To the contrary, morality, more often than not, is emphasized by the public for them. When they become the delegate of people to deal with other groups such as foreign countries, their personal deed, attitude and decorum speak for not only themselves but the public. That is why only experienced and bright men and women with a relatively high morality are chosen or elected. Admittedly, the scandal that previous Italian president have another lover besides his wife is the privacy of this man with a high position in the government, yet it overshadows the dignity of his country. Obviously, the ultimate result was his failure in the presidency. So did Nixon with the Watergate Affair. Although a politician's job is to build, maintain, and expand the wealth, prosperity and political influence of his or her nation, people sensed the genuineness and respond favorably to it.
In sum, political leaders might sacrifice a lot of things, which might be judged by the public they loved and the consequences are very annoying. How to deal with information on balance is just one of headache problems to face, but the maturity got from these problems will strengthen them to break the old and set a new era, which benefit us all.
